For security reasons you cannot telnet in as root.
Do it as an ordinary user.
Telnet does not encrypt the password as you
type it: people on the internet can see the
password when you use telnet.
The latest version of ssh does not have this
problem.
You should never telnet across the internet -
get, install and use ssh for that.
Stay within a local network where you trust everyone
if you're going to use telnet. There are very clever
vandals out there....
