can't telnet to localhost

Hi:
I can't seem to telnet into my RH5.2 box. Whenever I try, it connects to
the host sucessfully, but then states the connection was closed...
instantly. From the console, I've tried 'telnet localhost', 'telnet
127.0.0.1', 'telnet machinename' ... everything. I've also tried
telnetting to it from across the net: no luck still. I can ping all the
above hostnames just fine though. I've looked at inet.conf, and telnet is
not commented out. Local mail and other processes are working just fine.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks much,
