Check the mixer levels (I hope to release an updated version
of the old mixer command line program soon). Make sure[
your pcm and output levels are about 50-75. Make sure
your speakers are on. Then try a sound clip:

Get an "au" file (8bit uLaw), e.g., from xbong or xpat RPMs.
Cat that file to /dev/audio
  cat /us/lib/games/xpat/audio/goodbye.au >/dev/audio

Or, get a .wav file and use play (from sox, comes with RedHat)
to play the file:
  play anyfile.wav

(or as I always do, but DON'T RECOMMEND, just do an
ls -l with output to /dev/audio -- you should get a short burst
of static).

Cheers,
