Lane, here's some things that worked for me in XF86Config

Put 'DefaultColorDepth 16' in the section for the server you are running, 
before the first 'Subsection Display'.

In the Display subsections, for each colour depth you find a list of 
resolutions.  X starts in the first listed resolution and you can cycle 
through them with ctrl-num+ (or back with ctrl-num-).  The highest listed 
resolution is also the resolution of the virtual screen.
I have a Cirrus 5446 running at 16 bit colour.  The default mode line for 
16 bit read
 	"640x480" 	"800x600"	"1024x780"
I took out the last resolution and swapped the other two round.  That way I 
start in 800x600 and that is also the virtual screen size (eliminates that 
annoying scrolling effect - what's the point of having a virtual screen AND 
a virtual desktop?).
