Thanks to all who recommended this.  I tried it and I like it a lot.
In Win NT, I use Salamander, a 2-pane file manager, although not as
capable as FR.

But the author of FR evidently wrote it with a 1024x768 screen, and it
has a bad bug at 800x600: the config menu comes up behind the main
window and extends out of sight.

It works OK at 1024x768; I know because I mucked around with
X11R6config (I think that's what it's called; I'm not in Linux now)
until I got a =virtual= 1024x768 to play with.  That's another project
for the future: learning what all those video sections in X11R6config
mean and what causes some of them to be effective at different times.

I started with the default setup of that file, but I edited it to get
from 1024 to 800.  I didn't know about the keypress that's supposed to
switch you from one res to another... speaking of which: if you've
read my rambling this far, would you please tell me again what that
keypress is?  This time I'll write it down somewhere. <smile>
