First, you don't need to compile 2.0.36 if you
just want to use vfat, iso9660.

Instead, install the kernel-2.0.36-1.i386.rpm
# rpm -ivh kernel-2.0.36-1.i386.rpm
Then edit /etc/lilo.conf to make a new section that
points to the new kernel the rpm instals in the /boot directory.
Then run lilo again:
# lilo

Normally vfat, iso9660 etc. just work fine when you
install 2.0.36 from the rpm. You do need to be
running the kerneld daemon. That could be why
your old kernel would not give you vfat.
Enable kerneld using the ntsysv command.

Maybe you have a reason to compile a kernel, but if
you consider yourself new at linux, you probably don't
need to.
