  Assuming you are using fvwm2 (or a derivative), take a peek in your
.fvwm2rc file for the following lines...

*FvwmButtons(2x1, Title load, \
             Swallow(UseOld) "xload" 'Exec xload \
                     -nolabel -bg grey60 -update 5 -geometry -1500-1500 &')

    Comment this line and xload won't start when you type startx...
