  I don't know that the speed of the device makes any difference. However,
if you don't have the file type specified in fstab or on the line where you
mount it you probably won't see anything on the disk.

  Two things I'm sure you already tried: 1) making sure it's not an audio CD
in the drive and 2) cd to /mnt/cdrom (or whatever you call it). If you can
change directories to it you should be able to read the contents.
