Leston,
I bought the server version of WP/UNIX 7 for use on our small Linux
network. I've used the DOS version since early 1984 (v. 4.0-6.2c) so I was
excited about getting it for Linux.
Last night I gave up. We're going to StarOffice. WP on Linux is so full of
bugs that it is totally useless. For example, it shuts down on one
workstation when the 't' key is pressed or the user tries to "save as ...".
I had it shut down (with a "segmentation fault") when I tried to define
merge fields in a form. Draw doesn't work. Sometimes shortcut keys work,
most of the time they don't. With identical configurations on two machies we
have two different menus and responses. I cannot have the font installer
(/usr1/wp7/shbin/xwpfi) see the TrueType font directory even though the font
server (xfstt) allows them to be seen by other X apps. I could go on and on
venting my frustration about the lost time and work and the lack of response
by Corel, SDC or their support contractor.
I finally got through to a support person (a toll call, by the way). Once.
That person confirmed that they have known problems with their Linux version
on some machines, but not others. He couldn't replicate my problems but we
ran a whole series of tests. When he called back he left a voice mail
message for me with an email address. Mail to that address was returned by
the postmaster: no such user there.
I leave voice mail messages on their support line to no avail. SDC
provides no support, they just write the ports for Corel. I am so fed up
with paying $250 for an "upgrade" which flat-out does not work that I am
asking for my money back and will not spend any more money or time on the
new version 8 (which is already 2 months past the supposed ship date.)
Oh, yes. Just in case someone thinks it's only my machine: I tested this
on all three networked machines. One (the WP server) has an Intel PII/233, a
Diamond Viper V330 AGP video card and runs kernel 2.0.36. The other main
workstation has an AMD K6/300 with an STB video card and runs kernel 2.0.35.
The last machine is my Toshiba Libretto subnotebook with a color lcd display
(no idea about the video driver) and runs kernel 2.0.34. Yet the information
presented by WP is the same on my machine as it is on the techie's.
