I concur.  

I firmly  believe  Lance's original  question  represents  a  large
(mis)conception about the OSS community and the programmers who are
involved.

Most OSS  developers  do it solely  as a  hobby -- even a thrill or 
challenge -- and  often  have jobs related to  something completely 
different.  *These* are the true `hackers'  (much  unlike  who  the 
list has recently been calling `hackers').
