"Batch" files are called shell scripts in linux, I'm not a X-windows user, but
something as simple as

startx ; &staroffice

might work-you could just run this on the command line (of course "staroffice"
being the real "executable", im not sure what that is either. But if you felt
you had to -create script for it. Research-play around with it-give it a
chance before you compare it to DOS-"Windows is easy to learn and hard to use.
Linux is hard to learn and easy to use."
