Use linuxconf or netcfg to set up a PPP connection to your ISP.
For most ISPs, be sure to use the button to enable PAP authentication.
It can be set up without X, linuxconf or netcfg, but it's not so easy.

Once that's done, type /sbin/ifup ppp0 to start the connection,
and /sbin/ifdown ppp0 to stop it.

From X you can also run usernet, which gives you a toggle-button

gui to start and stop your PPP connection.
