I had this same situation.

When you compile 2.0.35 it does *not* give you the option to
enable iso9600.... so you ignore this problem and continue, 
and when you get done, you end up with a CDROM-less kernel.

What is happening is that iso9600 support is a SUBSET of
another choice.  I am not 100% sure now, since it has been a
couple of months since I did it, but I THINK that it is
international support or something like that.  You will have
to experiment a bit.

Just do this:

make mrproper
make config     <----- this step
make dep
make clean
make zImage

In the make config step, you can try several things until you
find iso9600 support for the CDROM.  In the meantime, if you
botch it up (helps to keep notes!), when you finish just do the
mrproper again and it is all cleaned out ready for the next try.

Perhaps someone here can pipe up with which make config choice it
is that enables CDROM/iso 9660 support.
