I heard of such an animal a while back. Search dejanews and the web
for "userfs" and "ftp".
The userfs package allows you to write a program that is controlled as
if it was a filesystem, so that you could, with the appropriate "glue"
program, mount a remote ftp site as a filesystem, or mount a local
.tar file as a filesystem. It sounds pretty neat.
