Rebuilding kernel w/ modules--the definitive steps--please?

Using Redhat 5.2 on Intel, I'm trying to rebuild the kernel w/ some modules.
From the Redhat book, I'm doing the following steps form /usr/src/linux:

make mrproper
make xconfig
make dep
make clean
make boot
make modules
make modules_install

Then I update lilo.

What about "make zImage" that some people suggest? Is it necessary?

More importantly, there is a module-info in /boot that has a sym link to
module-info-2.0.36-7xx etc. How does this get updated during the rebuild?
After the rebuild and a reboot, the new kernel loads fine but complains
about missing modules. The /lib/modules/ directory has a preferred directory
but nowhere in the Redhat installation guide does it discuss how to update
this?

Could someone do a lot of us a favor and give the "definitive"steps for a
rebuild that needs modules? There are so many different suggestions in the
news groups that I'm not sure who to listen to.

Thanks,
