I use KDE most of the time, though I also have Enlightenment (cool), 
Window Maker (also pretty cool), and a few others that I have yet to fire 
up.  I choose my KDE alternates expressly for the reason that they are 
GNOME-aware...though I do not yet have GNOME installed.  I am waiting for 
GNOME to get further along.  In any case, Redhat need not default to KDE, 
but now that the QT licensing issue is dead there is no reason that 
Redhat cannot, in good conscience, include KDE and QT with the distro.  
It can simply be an option to select rather than a default.

I tend to like KDE more and more, though I also am one who thinks that 
GNOME looks better.  GNOME is just not as far along as KDE is.
