MobiliX is pleased to announce the "Mobile UniX" news feed.
You may find news about UniX and its derivatives
(BSD, IRIX, Linux, Solaris, ..) on laptops and notebooks, on
handheld computers (HPCs) and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
and on mobile devices in general (watches, calculators, wearables ..).
Also news about mobile computing in general,
if there is a relation to UniX in some way and about
connectivity from mobile devices to UniX machines.

Here's where to find the news feeds
http://mobilix.org/newsfeed.html
You may include it into your webpage if you like.

Date: 1 Jul 2002 19:30:08 GMT

                            Linux-Kongress 2002
                            -------------------

                             Call for Workshops

As in the last two years the German Unix User Group (GUUG) with the support
of the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is planning to hold
five 3-day workshops from Sunday, September 1, to Wednesday, September 4 just
before the Linux-Kongress. The workshops will give Open Source developers
from around the world the chance to meet in person and work on their
projects. All Open Source projects are encouraged to apply for sponsorship.
All expenses, including travel, accommodation and conference fees for the
Linux-Kongress will be paid for participating projects.

This is a unique chance for people who have been working together over the
Internet but never seen each other to meet face-to-face and give their
common project a push. Maybe you can use this workshop to finally get the
1.0 version done, or you need to come together to redesign your API, or
maybe you just want to write some code non-stop for a few days.

Workshops will take place at the "Kloster Walberberg", a former medieval
castle and now a monastery and conference hotel set in a beautiful park.
Everything, food, drinks, Internet connection will be provided for, so you
can really concentrate on the job. Meeting rooms will be open 24h a day for
your hacking pleasure.

Please see the FAQ at http://www.linux-kongress.org/2002/workshops/faq.html
for all the details and information about how to apply.

Please make sure to apply soon as the planning time is quite short.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact Jochen Topf at
jochen.topf@guug.de.

A new book, titled "Linux Cluster Architecture" is just released by Sams
Publishing. You may get more details from their web site at

http://www.samspublishing.com/catalog/product.asp?session_id={1D52189C-E6D2-

04}

or just http:/www.samspublishing.com/ and search by ISBN number: 0672323680

This book starts with gathering the hardware, PC nodes, a hub and cables,
etc., then walks you through the Linux OS modifications necessary to make
them all aware of one another. The software development environment is set
up for NFS, plenty of IPC examples are followed by a detailed description of
cluster software architecture; a simple master-slave server is presented as
an example. Techniques for external performance measurement and internal
processing time analysis help you understand how these kinds of programs
work, and how you can examine and tune their performance.

All the book's software will (there is a problem currently) be available for
download soon.

Subject: New book on Linux Clusters
Date: 1 Jul 2002 19:30:15 GMT

All,

There is a new book titled "Linux Cluster Architecture" available
at most stores this month. You will learn how to

   - assemble a Linux cluster using PCs and networking hardware

   - configure the OS files and a software development environment

   - use C functions and OS calls to make these PCs work together

   - build a distributed transaction server, and then measure and
     tune it for peak overall performance and throughput

   - add near real-time performance monitoring and fault detection
     and recovery techniques

Have a look at http://www.samspublishing.com and search "linux cluster"
for further details.

Thanks,

Alex

From: ERDI Gergo <cactus@cactus.rulez.org>
Subject: Guikachu 1.3.0 "Meep-meep! *vroooooom*": GNOME Resource editor for
Date: 1 Jul 2002 19:35:01 GMT

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

A new development release of Guikachu is available.

About Guikachu
==============
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers. The user interface is
modelled after Glade, the GNOME UI builder.

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

Features
========
 * libXML-based I/O
 * Exporting to PilRC .rcp files (compile with pilrc -H)
 * Support for non-PalmOS PilRC targets (like the eBookMan)
 * String and string list resources
 * Dialog resources
 * Menu resources
 * Form resources
 * Per-application resources (e.g. version number)
 * WYSIWYG Form Editor, with drag & drop capability and visual resizing
 * XSLT style sheets and shell script to generate RCP files from
   Guikachu documents
 * Sample file with sample GNU PalmOS SDK-based application
 * Documentation (a complete user's manual)

About these releases
====================
This is the first release of the 1.3 development branch of
Guikachu. Development branch means it's all about crazy experimenting
stuff and not about providing a usable, polished product -- so don't
quite replace your 1.2 Guikachu just yet.

New features and improvements:
        * Huge speed-up in form editor. Yes, it's really that much
          faster. Try resizing a widget in Guikachu 1.2 and 1.3
          side-by-side and see the difference for yourself.
        * Support for label widgets containing multiple lines of text
          (use the '\r' escape sequence to insert a newline)
        * Nicer Graffiti indicator icon in widget palette ;)

Known regressions:
        * Files from the command line are not loaded
        * Some property editors (notably list editors) may have
          troubles with selecting the right item after
          insertion/deletion. Please file bug reports about buggy
          property editors at http://bugzilla.gnome.org

Guikachu uses GTK-- and GNOME-- for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented via the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. GConf is used to store user preferences. You will need the
versions of these packages available in the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the
exception of GNOME-- which you will need to upgrade to version 1.2.0)
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.
To use the stand-alone Guikachu-to-RCP converter program, xsltproc
(part of the libxslt package) is required.

Beware of bugémons!

Subject: COMMERCIAL: _Advanced Linux Networking_ book available
Date: 1 Jul 2002 19:35:05 GMT

Hi,

My latest book, _Advanced Linux Networking_, is now shipping. This book
is a general-purpose Linux networking book, but its focus is unique:
This book covers advanced topics and those that don't get much coverage
in typical Linux networking books. For instance, the chapter on Samba
includes information on using Samba's scripting features to set up a
network-accessible CD-burning station, and there are chapters on time
servers, font servers, and other often-overlooked servers. This book is
of interest to professional system administrators or advanced Linux
hobbyists who want a compact reference and tutorial to help them expand
their Linux networking expertise. I maintain a Web page on this book at
http://www.rodsbooks.com/adv-net/. Approximate page count: 750.

Here are the chapters in the book:

Part I. Low-Level Configuration
1. Kernel Network Configuration
2. TCP/IP Network Configuration
3. Alternative Network Stacks
4. Starting Servers

Part II. Local Network Servers
5. Configuring Other Computers via DHCP
6. Authenticating Users via Kerberos
7. File and Printer Sharing via Samba
8. File Sharing via NFS
9. Printer Sharing via LPD
10. Maintaining Consistent Time: Time Servers
11. Pull Mail Protocols: POP and IMAP
12. Running a News Server
13. Maintaining Remote Login Servers
14. Handling GUI Access with X and VNC Servers
15. Providing Consistent Fonts with Font Servers
16. Maintaining a System from a Distance
17. Performing Network Backups

Part III. Internet Servers
18. Administering a Domain via DNS
19. Push Mail Protocol: SMTP
20. Running Web Servers
21. Running FTP Servers

Part IV. Network Security and Router Functions
22. General System Security
23. Configuring a chroot Jail
24. Advanced Router Options
25. Configuring iptables
26. Using a VPN

Subject: PhotoAlbum.pl v1.0.0 Released
Date: 1 Jul 2002 19:35:18 GMT

PhotoAlbum.pl is a Perl script that creates a nice web friendly Photo Album of your pictures. It creates index files and individual pages with optional captions, image statistics and file names.

The Album generted it suitable for posting to a webpage, or burning to cdrom. One of the things I like to do is to take tons of pictures at family events and then burn cds for everyone. Having a nice HTML based Photo Album cdrom of an event is a big plus!

You can see examples of it here at my Photo Album page.

Requirements

    * Perl
    * Image Magick
    * File::copy
    * File::Basename
    * POSIX
    * Getopt::Std

It was written on Linux, but may work with any system using the above components.
The PhotoAlbum.pl homepage can be found at http://www.brianlane.com/photoalbum.php
