Subject: Advanced Bash Scripting Guide: version 1.3 update
Announcing the version 1.3 release of the "Advanced Bash Scripting Guide."
This e-book tutorial and reference is the equivalent of a 480-page print book.
With 240+ illustrative examples, the book covers virtually every aspect of
scripting.
The author invites comparisons with any of the commercially printed books on
shell scripting.
"This tutorial assumes no previous knowledge of
scripting or programming, but progresses rapidly toward an
intermediate/advanced level of instruction ...all the while
sneaking in little snippets of UNIX wisdom and lore. It serves
as a textbook, a manual for self-study, and a reference
and source of knowledge on shell scripting techniques. The
exercises and heavily-commented examples invite active reader
participation, under the premise that the only way to really
learn scripting is to write scripts."

There will be another Taiwan Linux Installfest, Sat. 29 June 2002
It will be almost exactly like http://www.slat.org/activity/TLUG_en
which will be updated soon... but you can sign up with Andrew anyway
now :-) Specify if just being an onlooker is OK or if you really need
to use their PC's.

NEW BOOK FROM INDUSTRY GURU IS AN ILLUMINATING GUIDE TO BUILDING SUCCESSFUL SOFTWARE
San Francisco, CA--In 1979, Chris Crawford was a pioneer in the computer game development community. The creator of one of the first computer war games, Crawford sold it to a handful of computer stores, distributed in hand-stuffed plastic bags. "Those early days were exciting--the few participants all knew we were building a revolution," Crawford notes. Thirty years later, he has brought everything he has learned about creating good, interactive games, software, and websites together in one book: THE ART OF INTERACTIVE DESIGN (No Starch Press, $29.95, http://www.nostarch.com/?interactive).
"Interactivity is at the very essence of computing, and yet few people understand its fundamental concepts," says Crawford, also author of the classic The Art of Computer Game Design (Osborne/McGraw-Hill, 1982). His new book is a non-technical tome about the theory of interactive design. "In trying to design software, most people focus their energies on 'features' and graphics, but these aren't as important as interactivity."
THE ART OF INTERACTIVE DESIGN demonstrates what interactivity is, why it's important, and how to design interactive software, games, and websites that work. Crawford's mellifluous style makes for fascinating and idea-inspiring reading that encourages readers to think about design in new ways. "[Crawford] could have written a book like 'Ten Easy Steps to Making Your Programs Easier to Use,'" says Dale Yocum, the founder of Clientele Software. "Instead, he's moved up a level and explored the Zen of interactivity. . . . Chris makes a difficult, nebulous topic approachable."
"Computers suck," says Crawford. "They don't do what you want them to do and they often do what you don't want them to do. And it's all attributable to unintentional design errors." He adds, "I wrote this for everybody involved -- directly or indirectly -- in software design."

GWintree is a genealogy chart program which produces family trees showing
all relatives, and other charts, from GEDCOM data, and incorporates
facilities to create, edit and view GEDCOM files. Charts can be printed
over multiple pages, or saved as image files in PNG format.
GWintree is a port to Linux of Wintree v3.2, a shareware program for MS
Windows, preserving near-identical functionality. It is distributed as
freeware, but not open source, and is available only as a binary rpm for
Intel/Linux Red Hat. This version - 0.9 - is the first release.
