Subject: ANN: Mahogany 0.64 released
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:07:08 CST

A new release of `Mahogany' portable GUI email client has been made.
=====================================================================

Source and binaries for a of Linux and Unix systems as well
as binaries for Win32 are available at

     http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3100

You can also get to the download page starting from

                  http://mahogany.sourceforge.net/

If you have any problems, please contact us on our mailing lists:

                mahogany-users@lists.sourceforge.net
              mahogany-developers@lists.sourceforge.net

In this message:

1. Announcing Mahogany Version 0.64
2. Acknowledgements
3. Changes Against the Previous Release

Announcing Mahogany Version 0.64
=====================================================================

Mahogany is an OpenSource(TM) cross-platform mail news client. It is
available for X11/Unix and MS Windows platforms and supports many of
the Internet protocols and standards, including POP3, IMAP4
(and the secure versions using SSL), SMTP and NNTP. Mahogany also
supports MIME and many common Unix mailbox formats (including MBX,
MBOX and MH).

The main "selling points" of Mahogany in our opinion are:

* Cross-platform: use the same client to access your email from
  all the machines you use, share the settings between them.

* Everything is configurable: all aspects of the program behaviour
  may be changed by the user, yet you don't have to spend any time
  doing it before starting to use the program which is completely
  plug-and-play - but you can fit it to your needs later.

* High quality IMAP4 support: Mahogany is first and foremost an IMAP
  client and, although it does support POP3, it uses all the
  IMAP-only features (on demand message and attachment retrieval,
  server side messages copying/moving and also sorting/threading if
  available) and doesn't just consider IMAP as another kind of POP
  server.

* Open to the world: Mahogany integrates well with the other programs
  (be it your WWW browser or an editor) and doesn't lock the user in
  proprietary formats, but uses the standard ones whenever possible.

* Full featured: some of the features not yet mentioned are: modern
  GUI, built-in filters using a real programming language (but also
  GUI support for creating them without learning it), message
  templates, multiple identities, support for calendar plugin,
  powerful and flexible address book (with vCard support),
  synchronization with Palm, built-in HTML viewer, X-Face support,
  support for receiving faxes sent via EFax and much more.

Acknowledgements
=====================================================================

Mahogany is written using the OpenSource wxWindows framework for GUI
C++ applications, building on the GTK+ toolkit on Unix and native
Win32 API under Windows. The imap-2000 (c-client) library developed
by University of Washington is used for mail folder access. We also
use OpenSSL for SSL support and compface for X-Face support. We wish
to thank all the people whose work has made writing Mahogany much
simpler (and even possible at all)!

Changes Since Release 0.63
=====================================================================

Don't let the small difference of the version numbers fool you -
many things have changed dramatically since 0.63. For example, do try
this version if you had tried Mahogany before and were unhappy about
the speed of accessing the IMAP folders or deficiencies of POP3
support!

Key changes are:

* incomparably more efficient IMAP support:

  - retrieve headers on-demand making it possible to work with huge
    IMAP folders efficiently
  - use server side sorting and threading when available

* local cache for POP3 folders which makes it possible to reliably
  detect new mail in them

Some of new features:

* HTML viewing and printing support

* Mailing list support: possibility to automatically send reply only to
  the mailing list

* Added possibility to monitor the folders in the background without
  opening them (IMAP)

* Several new commands: permanently delete messages (not to trash),
  mark messages read/unread, open folder read-only, update/ping
  folder

* One key message reading: automatically pass to the next unread
  message or folder after finishing reading the current one.

Other noticeable improvements:

* Win32 version now has SSL support as well

* Passwords can now be stored only for the current session duration

* Many GUI fixes: more (optional) progress dialogs, improvement to
  the filters dialog ("copy" and "rename" added), quickly change the
  sort/thread options by right clicking on the folder window header

Important bug fixes:

* Sorting/threading work together

* Handle connection loss more gracefully

* Many fixes to the new mail reporting and processing

* Big improvements in handling of sending and reading messages in charsets
  other than ASCII

Please see the CHANGES file in the distribution for an even more
detailed list of changes.

 We hope you will enjoy Mahogany!

From: philh@comuno.freeserve.co.uk (phil hunt)
Subject: Herbrip-0.3.1 released
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:08:12 CST

I have just released Herbrip version 0.3.1. Herbrip aims to
be an easy-to-use public-key email encryption program; a bit
like PGP or GnuPG, but effortless to use in normal operation,
because public keys are exchanged transparently. Also,
header lines and attachments are automatically encrypted
(and decrypted at the other end).

Herbrip is part of my Herbivore initiative to encourage more
people to use encrypted email. Herbrip is a command-line
implementation of the Herbivore protocol (the name stands for
"Herbivore Reference Implementation in Python").

At the moment, Herbrip contains a working encryption engine;
but it is not yet useful for end users, as it hasn't been
integrated into any email clients. This is what I plant to
do next.

The main change in Version 0.3.1 is that processing an email
for encryption or decryption may result in more than one output
emails, for example if I Cc: a message to several people, I
will have to send a separate message to each one, encrypted in
the recipient's public key.

Herbrip is available from:
  <http://www.vision25.demon.co.uk/oss/herbivore/herbrip.html>

The Herbivore home page is at:
  <http://www.vision25.demon.co.uk/oss/herbivore/intro.html>

Herbrip is licenced under the GNU GPL.

New Book Shows How to Configure, Use, and Troubleshoot VMware:
THE BOOK OF VMWARE is the guide users have been asking for

San Francisco, CA--No Starch Press, Inc., computer book publisher, and VMware, the global leader in virtualization software for Intel computers, today announced the launch of THE BOOK OF VMWARE: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO VMWARE WORKSTATION (February 2002, 1-886411-72-7, $39.95, 354 pp., No Starch Press, http://www.nostarch.com/?vmware). VMware Workstation allows users to run multiple operating systems (and their applications) simultaneously on a single computer, increasing productivity and flexibility. Until now, there has been little documentation for the over 750,000 users of VMware Workstation 3.0.

"A great introduction to VMware Workstation. . . .not only how to install and use the product, but also how to configure, network and integrate your virtual machines."-EDOUARD BUGNION, CO-FOUNDER AND CHIEF ARCHITECT AT VMWARE, INC.

THE BOOK OF VMWARE is a comprehensive guide to everything from installation and device configuration (on guest operating systems) to file transfers and networking. Readers learn how to:

* Get the most out of Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and other guest systems
* Set up VMware devices such as virtual disks, ethernet interfaces, USB devices, and more
* Optimize guest system performance with the VMware Tools
* Configure the host and guest system networks
* Troubleshoot common problems
* Set up dual configuration systems
* Seamlessly share files between host and guest systems

The CD-ROM includes a demo version of VMware for Windows and Linux, as well as many of the utilities discussed in the book.

With THE BOOK OF VMWARE as a guide, users spend more time working without a glitch. Available from bookstores or No Starch Press (1-800-420-7240, http://www.nostarch.com), THE BOOK OF VMWARE is the ultimate guide to working with multiple operating systems on a single computer.

Subject: NEW RELEASE: KDE Directory Administrator v0.2
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:09:14 CST
Reply-To: ppatterson@carillonis.com

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

KDE Directory Administrator Version 0.2

KDirAdm is a LDAP Directory management tool written for the KDE Desktop
Environment version 2 or later. It aims to provide all of the functionality
of most commercial directory management tools, including:

    * LDIF import/export
    * Creation/modification/removal of directory entities of all kinds
    * Schema Management

Release Information:

This release adds preliminary LDIF Import support, as well as the ability to
modify user entries in the directory. If you run into problems with the LDIF
import, PLEASE send us a bug report... it imports our test files correctly,
but LDIF is such an ugly file format, that we probably didn't think of every
possible combination to try. Shadow password support is still missing as
well, although this will be in the next release. This release should be
considered stable at this point, although it still lacks some functionality.

Current Features supported by KDirAdm:

LDIF Import (needs more testing)
LDIF Export
User Entity Creation/Modification/Deletion
Organisational Unit Creation/Deletion

The homepage for KDirAdm is at:

http://www.carillonis.com/kdiradm

where both source and Debian packages may be obtained.

Comments, suggestions, wishlist items and patches may be sent to
the project co-ordinator at : ppatterson@carillonis.com

Subject: SHAREWARE: txt2pdf 5.5
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:09:22 CST

Most of your documents are text files. Usually, your reports from
legacy applications, DBs, ERP applications and datawarehouse are
textual. txt2pdf allows you to take those old text files and turn them
into PDF's using only PERL, which means you don't even need to pass
the data through PostScript first.

You can run txt2pdf on any system that runs PERL, but it has been
tested and is verified to work on many operating systems.
etxt2pdf is the executable version of txt2pdf. It's been specially
compiled for those users who simply can't or don't want to run PERL on
their systems. It has all the functionality of the original perl
version, and is merely distributed in binary form for your
convenience.
We currently have 5 executable versions: Windows, Linux, Solaris, AIX,
HP-UX
If you're interested in a binary for another operating system, such as
FreeBSD please let us know, and we'll send you one. With enough
requests, we'll also add one here permanently. Please note that the
Windows version comes with an extra tool known as Visual txt2pdf.

Here are some of the things that you can achieve with txt2pdf:
You can mark coloured (using PERL regular expressions) phrases in the
produced PDF files.
You can mark bold, italic and bold italic phrases in the produced
PDFfiles.
You can add page numbers on every page.
You can add text at the beginning and at the end of every file.
You can add a border to every page.
Internet specific phrases such as http://... ftp://...
mailto:...file:... ldap:... news:... will automatically be made into
clickable URL's.
You can create a link to a specific age within a PDF document by
simply adding http://...pdfdocument#pdfmark
Every word like MIME:... will automatically become a link that will
launch the correct application to open that file.
You can use background and foreground layers.
All predefined encodings (WinAnsiEncoding, MacRomanEncoding,
MacExpertEncoding, PDFDocEncoding) supported by the PDF format and the
Unix default are supported by txt2pdf.
It's possible to rerun txt2pdf infinitely (every configured second,
sleep feature) on a specific directory (and also it's recursive
directories) moving the produced PDF to a specific directory, and the
original text to a specific directory.
txt2pdf supports STDIN and STDOUT.
EPD 1.0 support. You can use EPD inside the background layer.

Subject: RadioActive 1.3.1 "Do not use the F word in release codenames"
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:09:28 CST

And by F word, I do mean the word "Fuck".

Anyway, I new old [1] release of RadioActive, the command-line/GNOME/Panel
Applet combo radio tuner application is available at
        http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/radioactive/

It has a LOT of new translations (the GNOME-i18n team deserves a big
'you guys rule', for providing translations in 20 languages), and
build-time fixes (a.k.a. 'hopefully that idiot didn't leave half the files
out ths time').

Oh, and of course it rules and rocks and everything.

The moral of this release is that you should
        1, always test dist tarballs before uploading them
        2, always, ALWAYS tag releases in CVS so you don't have to
           retroactively goof around and generally act confused

[1] If you've seen messages on the RadioActive website or my Advogato
diary about the internal reorganization, this has nothing to do with that.
A separate 1.4.0 will be released (hopefully shortly) containing the new
code design and some new features.

Clean mind, clean body: take your pick.
