Subject: MIMEDefang 2.3 -- flexible mail scanner for virus/trojan protection
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:09:51 CST

MIMEDefang is a GPL'd mail scanner which runs on Linux or UNIX systems.
It can manipulate mail in many ways, including removing Windows viruses,
replacing large attachments with URLs, adding boilerplate disclaimers,
restricting access to recipients to specified e-mail relays, and so on.
MIMEDefang uses Sendmail's "milter" API, and requires Sendmail 8.11 or
newer (8.12.1 recommended).

MIMEDefang is at http://www.roaringpenguin.com/mimedefang/

Major changes since 2.2:

     * Much better error logging.
     * Workaround for bugs in Solaris and AIX which caused temporary
       failure messages.
     * New actions:
          + action_tempfail to send a temporary failure SMTP code.
          + action_change_header to change the value of an existing
            header.
          + action_quarantine_entire_message to keep a copy of the entire
            e-mail message.
     * Integration with SpamAssassin
     * Integration with the Anomy HTML Cleaner.
     * Many bug fixes
     * Better integration with commercial anti-virus tools.

I have just released v2.3 of DigiTemp, the one wire temperature sensor
application, to my website at http://www.brianlane.com/digitemp.php

New features include support for DS2409 coupler chips like those used in Simon
Atkin's one wire hub at http://www.simat.enta.net

It also includes a new tree walking feature that displays the whole one wire LAN
with serial numbers and user friendly descriptions of each device.

I have also added a binary RPM for i386 machines.

Subject: re KSnuffle announcement

vfear <vfear@skywalker.thedarkside> has "announced" that KSnuffle-0.6 has
been released. I don't know who this guy is, but the announcement is pure
fiction. Apart from the fact that the body of the announcement refers to
KSnuffle-0.7, the current version is KSnuffle-2.3.

Could announcements about KSnuffle be restricted to those that originate with
me (after all, i am the author - see http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk etc) and
could any further rubbish from vfear be ignored. This seems to have happened
several times before

From: hdholm@epoch.ncsc.mil (Howard Holm)
Subject: SECURITY: NSA Security-enhanced Linux updated
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:10:18 CST

A new release of the LSM-based SELinux prototype has been put on the
SELinux web site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/>. The stable (2.4)
LSM-based SELinux prototype was updated to kernel 2.4.17 and was
updated to include a number of bug fixes and minor enhancements made
since the previous release. A new development (2.5) LSM-based SELinux
prototype based on kernel 2.5.2 was also added to the site.

Security-enhanced Linux incorporates a strong, flexible mandatory
access control architecture into the major subsystems of the Linux
kernel. The system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation of
information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. This
allows threats of tampering and bypassing of application security
mechanisms to be addressed and enables the confinement of damage that
can be caused by malicious or flawed applications. The SELinux web
site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/> contains background information,
documentation, source code, and archives for the selinux mailing-list.

From: pifpafpuf@gmx.de (Harald Kirsch)
Subject: bras-2.2 rule based command execution
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:10:43 CST

ANNOUNCING
                             --- bras ---
                     Rule Based Command Execution

I am pleased to announce version 2.2.

WHAT'S NEW?

The error reporting was redesigned and reimplemented due to buggy
behaviour in some circumstances.

A new rule was added to the default rule set. It translates .lex to .c.

WHERE CAN I GET IT?

The distribution can be found at
   http://bras.berlios.de/

WHAT IS IT ANYWAY?

Bras is a rules-based command execution system, ala 'make'. It
includes a powerful rules system supporting foreign directory
triggers, multiple rule types, and on-the-fly dependency
generation. It is written in Tcl and uses Tcl as its script language.

Main features are:
o rule-controlled command execution, similar to make;
o written in Tcl, no compilation required;
o Tcl-syntax so that commands associated with rules may contain
  control structures;
o dependencies in foreign directories can trigger sourcing rule files
  in that directory, recursive bras-execution is not necessary;
o just any boolean expression can be used to define when a target is
  out-of-date;
o pattern rules which allow to derive dependencies and/or commands on
  the fly;
o explicit invocation of the reasoning process possible;
o reasoning engine can be used as a module in Tcl programs;

Send comments and requests for enhancements to
pifpafpuf@gmx.de .

Subject: tk8500, new open source software for the ICOM IC-R8500 receiver
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:10:50 CST

The ICOM IC-R8500 is a high quality 0.1 - 2000 MHz radio receiver.

I wrote tk8500, a new open source computer program which lets you:

(1) Control the IC-R8500 from your computer.

(2) Download/upload the radio's memory channels from/to a
csv (comma-separated values) file.

(3) Log active frequencies, intercept time, and relative signal
strength automatically while scanning.

Though I've all but abandoned Windows 98 in favor of free Linux,
I wrote tk8500 in a language (Tcl/Tk) which permits it run on either
operating system. It may even run on Macs, Solaris, and other
environments, but I've only tested it on Linux and Windows 98.

You can read about and download a beta test version of tk8500
from my home page:

    http://members.core.com/~parnass

I don't warrant the software, but it won't cost you anything.
