Subject: New 2001 Edition of the POSIX Standard Available
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:06:24 CST

POSIX and the Single Unix Spec have been merged into a single new
standard known as the Austin Group specifications (aka IEEE Std
1003.1-2001 / The Open Group Base Specifications Issue 6).

The whole thing costs 182 GBP in the UK or 370 USD elsewhere
(including shipment), and covers base definitions, API,
shell/utilities and rationale (4 documents, formerly known
as POSIX.1 and POSIX.2).

Perhaps still a bit much for a private student budget, but
definitely worth a purchase suggestion for all your local
university or corporate libraries.

From: ERDI Gergo <cactus@cactus.rulez.org>
Subject: Guikachu 1.1.3 "HbW": GNOME Resource editor for PalmOS projects
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 21:06:41 CST

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

A new development release of Guikachu is available.

About Guikachu
==============
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers. The user interface is
modelled after Glade, the GNOME UI builder.

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

Features
========
 * libXML-based I/O
 * Exporting to PilRC .rcp files (compile with pilrc -H)
 * Support for non-PalmOS PilRC targets (like the eBookMan)
 * String and string list resources
 * Dialog resources
 * Menu resources
 * Form resources
 * Per-application resources (e.g. version number)
 * WYSIWYG Form Editor, with drag & drop capability
 * XSLT style sheets and shell script to generate RCP files from
   Guikachu documents
 * Sample file with sample GNU PalmOS SDK-based application
 * Documentation (a complete user's manual)

About these releases
====================
        * Font properties have nice dropdown lists in place of the old
          numeric entries
        * Support for Symbol fonts (Jay Bloodworth)
        * Support for escape sequences (Jay Bloodworth, me)
        * I18n fixage of target machine descriptions

Note that 1.1.x is the development series. Bugs may occur, the
documentation may not be in sync with the real features, build may
fail. Download the latest 1.0 release for serious use.

Guikachu uses GTK-- and GNOME-- for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented via the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. GConf is used to store user preferences. You will need the
versions of these packages available in the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the
exception of GNOME-- which you will need to upgrade to version 1.2.0)
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.
To use the stand-alone Guikachu-to-RCP converter program, xsltproc
(part of the libxslt package) is required.

Beware of bugémons!

Reply-To: sood aaditya <ec98310@matrix.reccal.ernet.in>

This is an announcement about a new LUG in CREC, Kerela, India.

We run a LUG in CREC (Calicut Regional Engineering College, Kerela,
India) called CREC-LUG. Although there have been Linux users in the
college since about 1995, paradoxically the LUG was founded in Nov 2001!
That partly explains why we haven't had any meetings yet, the other
reason being the exams :-/.

The DNS to our server (called tux.reccal.ernet.in) is shaky and slow
(almost like the whole ERNET), so the site better be accessed at the IP
address. Mail however would come through.

Lug Name : CREC-LUG
Co-ordinator : aaditya sood <ec98310 at matrix.reccal.ernet.in>
Mailing List Url: http://202.41.105.20/mailman/listinfo/lug
Mailing List Subscribe : <lug-request at tux.reccal.ernet.in> or from the Mailing list Url
Mailing List Archives : http://202.41.105.20/pipermail/lug
Lug Website : http://202.41.105.20/
First Meeting : Sometime in Jan 2002
Local Resources : A mailing list+website+~150 people:)

So any of the alumni of the college, anyone near Calicut (or anyone
at all:)) is invited to join. Just send a mail to me for more info.

Happy hacking!

in every major Indian city.

The book is sold at http://www.aldev.8m.com

The first edition of this book (under different title)

specific to
PostgreSQL.

Books are immensely important for open-source projects
like
PostgreSQL as they help the new & experienced users.
There are several books on PostgreSQL in the market
which directly and indirectly are helping the
development of PostgreSQL.

PostgreSQL is a very sophisticated software and to use
such
a sophisticated database, you need a book.

"A Complete Guide to PostgreSQL (Redhat Database)" is
a "must have" book as it is very difficult to use
PostgreSQL without
this book. This book had evolved over a very long

Hi,

IST is pleased to announce that Volumes 6A and 6B of the O'Reilly
Associates 'Definitive Guides to the X Window System' series of books
are now available for free, direct download in various formats and
contents from IST's web site.

Volume 6A is the Motif Programming Manual.
Volume 6B is the Motif Reference Manual.

The versions that can be downloaded from IST's web site are later
versions than those made available by O'Reilly themselves. In
particular, Volume 6A from IST is for Motif 2.1, whereas from O'Reilly
it is for Motif 1.2.

Antony Fountain and Jeremy Huxtable of IST have completely overhauled
Volume 6A, Motif Programming Manual, for Motif 2.1. This online
edition is the first publication of the Third Edition, dated December
2001, and is the authoritative 'how-to' work on Motif 2.1. A printed
edition will be available from IST in due course.

Volume 6B, Motif Reference Manual is also available in updated form
online. This is the Second Edition of 6B, dated February 2000, for
Motif 2.1, as revised and updated by Antony Fountain. The online
edition has been augmented with a number of patches and the sections
on UIL have been re-instated since the last paper publication of the
volume. Volume 6B is the standard reference work on Motif 2.1.

The versions available from IST are available as both PDF files and
source files for UNIX FrameMaker 5.5. Those available from O'Reilly
are in troff format, and exactly match the last paper publications.

Information about the books and the links to download them can be
found at:

Thanks

Neil
