Subject: LILO version 22.0 released
Reply-To: johninsd@hotmail.com
LILO release 22.0 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.
Version 22 is a major update to versions 21 .. 21.7.5.
o A graphical user interface using VGA 640x480x16 (mode 0x12) is added.
o Secure passwords are implemented using four CRC-32 polynomials.
o RAID1 codes are completely re-written, and correctly implement 'lock',
'fallback', and "lilo -R ..."
THE NEW RAID1 IMPLEMENTATION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH VERSION 21.
Those using version 21 should read 'README.raid1' before installing these
new codes. There is a compatibility mode (lilo -x mbr-only) for existing
RAID1 installations which are not going to be converted to the Version 22
implementation.
Source code is available for download from:
http://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo (developer's site)
ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo
Or from the main distribution site:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo (please use)
See the distribution file 'CHANGES' for details of the differences between
22.0 and prior releases.

FS: Harley Hahn's "Open Computing Unix Unbound" - $6 + shipping.
Published by Osborne
ISBN 0-07-882050-2
I have a short supply.
These books originally sold for $27.95 and are considered by many to
be one of the best books ever written as an introduction/reference to
the Unix Operating System (also applies to Linux, the BSDs, and
Solaris ).
They feature info on Unix, X windows, multiple shells, the Vi editor
the Emacs editor, etc.
The Apendixes and Quick Indexes are tremendous resources for finding
commands. There are summaries of commands for unix, vi, and emacs:
it's worth the price for this alone.
I'm asking $5.00 plus a flat rate shipping/handling charge.
Total price shipped at book rate: $10.00 total in Lower 48 states.
Total price shipped Priorty mail: $13.00 total in Lower 48 states.
For immediate shipment use Paypal; I will, also, accept a prepaid
*Postal* Money order but the books will we be shipped in the order
that I receive payment (I'll return MO's for unfulfilled orders).
Use Paypal and be sure. All sales final.

Web Spinners October 6th Saturday Meeting Announcement.
Repost freely.

Topic: What's in a Domain Name
Speaker: Peter Benjamin and Daniel Culbertson
Date: Saturday, October 6th
Time: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm,
Lunch at noon for 45 minutes.
Location: Westside Pavillon Mall, Community Room C
3rd Floor (top) - West End of Mall
10800 West Pico Blvd, Corner of Westwood Avenue
Costs: $3 admission (Handouts are $1 to $2 when available)
Topic: What's in a Domain Name
This seminar will be a fast overview of the many pieces
of the DNS puzzle from the viewpoints of an end user,
an administrator and a domain name owner. There will
be nuts and bolts for setting up a computer with Internet
access, IP stack software, security concerns, and local
DNS cache service pros and cons.
The talk will start with local domain name service (DNS) that
you might run on your local computer in cache only mode, or
as an authoritative name server supporting multiple domain
names, www prefixes, 3rd and 4th level domain names (no sub
domain configurations), and MX mail records. An overview
of common BIND named.conf 8.x directives will be given.
But there is more to DNS than running it locally. What happens
at your ISP? Why do they not want DNS running on your computer?
What about secondary service and dynamic IP numbers? Setting
up a secondary slave and tertiary secondaries will be covered.
The IP/MAC network layers will be touched upon to serve as
the foundation of how DNS resolution occurs.
The Verisign Global Registry Service and the host DNS
tables is the top level 'root' database where it all
starts. A quick briefing of what this Global Registry
Service is and how it supplies your DNS with root level
service, and directly points to your name server to
greatly speed up name resolution and reduce related
net traffic. Plus the SDK software available to anyone
that the other Registrars use to read and write to the
Global Registry will be touched upon.
Until recently, Network Solutions had a monopoly on domain
name registration. Now, however, many different registrars
compete for your business. The new registrars vary widely
on price, customer service and, most importantly, on the
legal rights your registration gives you. For example, some
registrars reserve the right to revoke your domain name for
any reason. Others prohibit you from changing to a new registrar.
Some even severely restrict how you may use your domain. All
of this is information you must have to choose a registrar that
meets your needs and protects your rights.
And the seminar will wrap up with news about the new domain names,
the time schedule, the bidding structure to reserve your name,
and whether getting your name with all the top level names is
worth it and why and why not.

I am here attempting to simulate the network of queues using CNCL ,
but has not got the desired success till now. How can I simulate two
queues feeding to one queue , that is my problem .I am in fact perhaps
facing the problem to deal with event handler , is there any way to
invoke a new eventhandler for which the jobs are from the previous two
queues .
Thanking You in anticipation .

There is a port of the ARJ archiver to Linux (and FreeBSD) at
http://testcase.newmail.ru.
The binaries are for i386 ELF/GLIBC v 2.x.
As for the feature set, we tried to keep it as close to the DOS
version as possible. There also some Linux-unique options that one
may take advantage of.

Subject: GNU MDK 0.5 released
From: Jose Antonio Ortega Ruiz <jao@gnu.org>
GNU MDK 0.5 has been released. It is available from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mdk/ and mirrors of that site (see list of
mirror sites at http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html) [0].
GNU MDK provides a simulator of D. Knuth's MIX computer, and a
development environment to write, run and debug MIXAL programs on it.
New in this release:
** Added Guile support:
- New utility 'mixguile': a Guile shell with an embedded MIX
virtual machine.
- gmixvm and mixvm have an embedded Guile interpreter: Scheme
can be used as an extension language.
- See the updated User's Manual for details.
** New (g)mixvm commands:
- psrc: print the current program's source file path
- pprog: print the current program's path
- pline: print the current program line
- pstat: print the current virtual machine status
- slog: set on/off the logging of info messages to stdout (or
the command log in gmixvm)
** For the sake of coherence, the following (g)mixvm commands
have been renamed:
- tracing -> strace
- timing -> stime (set on/off timing),
ptime (print timing stats)
- devdir -> sddir (set the devices dir),
pddir (print the devices dir)
** Major documentation update to include Guile support and various
cosmetic corrections for pretty ps and pdf manuals (provided in the
distribution in addition to the html format).
** In gmixvm, when a font specified in the config file cannot be
loaded, it is removed from the configuration.
** gmixvm now accepts the standard command line options -vuh
** Bug fix: when the MIX font is changed in gmixvm, the loc widget
font is correctly updated.
** Bug fix: help messages are now correctly aligned in (g)mixvm.
** Bug fix: timing statitics for the MOVE instruction are correctly
computed.
** Bug fix: pressing return at an empty 'MIX >' prompt does not
produce an error message.
** Bug fix: the configure script now correctly detects the absence of
libglade (needed by gmixvm).
** Bug fix: makefiles corrected so that mdk accepts a VPATH build
('make distcheck' works now)
Visit the MDK home page at http://www.gnu.org/software/mdk/mdk.html.
Bug reports should go to bug-gnu-mdk@gnu.org.
Enjoy!
