From: Preben Randhol <randhol+abuse@pvv.org>
Subject: [ANNOUNCE]: Online Ada textbook
Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 11:18:07 CST

John English recently made this text available and its an excellent way
to get familiar with Ada at no expense. The book can be found at this
address: http://www.it.bton.ac.uk/staff/je/adacraft/

There is also freely (GPL) available Ada 95 compiler on the net called
GNAT. This and a lot of additional resouces can be found from the
web-site: http://www.adapower.com/

The original announcement:

Since my book "Ada 95: The Craft of Object-Oriented Programming" is
now out of print following Prentice Hall being swallowed up by the
all-enveloping Pearson group, I have reacquired the copyright and
released it online at http://www.it.bton.ac.uk/staff/je/adacraft/
in HTML format. It can also be downloaded for offline use.

I've fixed the errata from the print edition (I think) but there
will no doubt be others that I've missed (or added). Please let
me know if you spot anything that needs fixing...

Enjoy!

From: Howard Holm <hdholm@epoch.ncsc.mil>
Subject: SECURITY: NSA Security-enhanced Linux updated
Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 11:18:14 CST

A new release of the LSM-based SELinux prototype has been
put on the SELinux web site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/>.
This release contains many bug fixes and improvements to both LSM and
SELinux and is based on the lsm-2001_09_23 patch against kernel 2.4.10.
The release includes new and reworked hooks to control additional
operations.

The policy now includes hwclock_t and ping_t domains for hwclock and
ping (from David Wheeler,) an ipsec_t domain for the FreeSWAN IKE
daemon and programs (from Mark Westerman,) and an httpd_t domain
for Apache (from MITRE.) None of these has been extensively tested
by the NSA SELinux team, and they may require some additional work.
Note that we have not yet included any FreeSWAN or Apache components
in the material distributed with SELinux.

Subject: Linux StepByStep enhancements
Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 11:19:07 CST

The staff of editors for the Linux StepByStep site (http://linux.nf) are
pleased to announce that as of the morning of Tues, 25-Sep-2001, the entire
site is available in 9 different languages!
These languages include:
English
Chinese
French
German
Italian
Japanese
Korean
Portuguese
Spanish

The main site has been configured to use Apache's automatic
content-negotiation feature to automatically display the site in your
native language.

The site currently has 14 mirrors around the world, though not all mirrors
will carry all translations of the site. The site is also supported by a
staff of 10 editors, and hosts the ~200 member linux-users@linux.nf mailing
list (http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users for info).

The site provides notebook style, first person accounts of installing
software/hardware on a Linux system. They are intentionally specific, and
the information is culled from user experiences, published HOWTOS/FAQs, as
well as from the linux-users mailing list. The site and list are a
distribution neutral forum open to Linux users of all experience and skill
set levels.

Contributions of material for the site may be sent to submissions@linux.nf

LILUG, the Long Island Linux Users Group, will hold its regular monthly
meeting on Tuesday, October 9th, 2001, at 8 PM in Gleeson Hall, room
202/204, on the campus of SUNY Farmingdale.

This month's topic is: Digital Video Security Recording on Linux
Anthony P. Graziano and Art Rice of Elmo USA will give a technical
presentation on a Linux run digital security video recorder. It might be a
good idea to bring whatever is necessary for you to get you on a network.
We hope to have a 10 or 100 base T multiport repeater or bridge available.
Apparently these devices have some neat network features.

LILUG meetings are free and open to all. We meet on the second Tuesday of
every month on the campus of SUNY Farmingdale. For directions and more
