Subject: SMSLink 0.52b now available
Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2000 12:24:49 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the public release of SMSLink 0.52b.

This software implements a client / server gateway to the SMS protocol
(the short messages sent to mobile phones). It requires the use of
dedicated hardware, though (a Falcom, Wavecom or Siemens voice modem GSM
module,
which is basically just a GSM with a plain serial port and AT commands
support -- please see the project web page for a list of supported
hardware). Both sending and receiving SMSes is supported. Also included
is a SMS to eMail gateway module. Users are now able to send (short)
emails straight from their mobile phones keypad. Mail delivery to the
GSM is under development.

Version 0.52b brings a port of the command-line client to the Win32
platform through the use of the Cygwin library. The distribution archive
also now includes a contrib/ directory containing 2 more Win32 (native)
clients (see CHANGELOG for details).

This software is distributed under the GNU GPL.

For more information, please visit the project web page at :

http://smslink.sourceforge.net/

Thanks.

Ph. A.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Z is a simple, safe and convenient front-end for the compress(1),
uncompress(1), gzip(1), tar(1), zip(1) and unzip(1) utilities for
compressing and uncompressing files and directories. See the included
man page for full details.

The basic idea behind z is that you can just run `z SOMETHING` where
SOMETHING is any file, directory, compressed file or compressed archive,
and z will do the right thing in a standard way. Simple for novices and
convenient for experts. Great for unpacking downloads or compressing
files to save space.

Subject: popsneaker 0.5 prerelease announcement
Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2000 12:33:00 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

popsneaker is a powerful email filter for POP3 accounts. You can
filter emails without downloading the body of a message. Very
flexible filterrules can be defined.

This new version is a completly new design, written from scratch,
without code or methods from older versions. It will remove some
disadvantages which where unavoidable with the old application.

The new main objective of popsneaker's design is performance. This
prerelease already acts very efficient, but lacks most advanced
features known from version 0.4. Some of those which have proven
useful will be ported at later times, when the core is more stable.
At the moment, the "accept", "assume", "deny" and "maxsize" filters
are integrated.

The advantages of popsneaker 0.5 are:

   - asynchronous header downloads
   - multiple simultaneous downloads
   - scaleable on multiprocessor machines

You can get the current prerelease at:
   http://www.ixtools.de/popsneaker/popsneaker5.html

For a stable 0.4 version look at:
   http://www.ixtools.de/popsneaker/index.html

Subject: LOCAL: LUV Meeting - Tuesday 5th December - "Perl 6, the story so far"
Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2000 12:23:40 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi everyone,

The next meeting of the Linux Users of Victoria (Australia)
will be held on Tuesday 5th of December at 7pm.

This month we have Leigh Dyer showing off Lego MindStorm and
Jeremy Howard telling us about the new features of perl 6.

Leigh Dyer:
"Lego Mindstorms and Linux"
While most of you have probably heard of Lego Mindstorms at some
stage, many of you might be wondering what exactly it is. Put simply,
it's the greatest toy ever invented, but it's much more than just a toy.
Lego Mindstorms is a system which lets you build robots using Lego
bricks, which are controlled by the RCX, a 'smart' brick which you
program from your PC. While the official software runs only on
Windows, there are several free alternatives wihich offer far greater
power and can be used from Linux.

Jeremy Howard:
"Perl 6, the story so far"
Find out about what's planned for the next major version of
Perl. Will Perl lose its punctuation? Will everything be OO? Will it
still run your existing Perl code? But wait, there's more... we'll
also find out how the Perl development community totally restructured
itself to take on this task, and hear how these changes have worked so
far.

When:
        7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
        Tuesday 5th December

Where:
Theatre 1 (downstairs), SEECS Building, 221 Bouverie St, Carlton.

All welcome.

After the meeting, you can join us for pizza at Papa Gino's, which is
a 5-minute walk from the venue.

For more information about the Linux Users of Victoria, please visit
our web site, at www.luv.asn.au.

Project ARIES (Advanced Research on Internet E-Servers) from Ericsson
Research Canada aims to study, prototype, and measure different types
of Internet applications on Linux workstation clusters and some of
their telephony platforms. The goal is to assess the feasibility of
implementing a highly available, scalable, and fault-tolerant solution
on these systems.

Performance measurement results for web servers will be shown and
different load balancing schemes will be explained. Several free
software solutions for implementing distributed file systems on a
Linux workstation cluster will be analyzed.

Linux-Québec's monthly technical meetings are free and open to all.
They are generally held on the second Wednesday of each month, except
in July and August. They are an opportunity to discuss the latest
news in the Linux world, establish contacts, and listen to a technical
presentation on a Linux and free software (free as in free speech)
related subject. They are often held at École Polytechnique de Montréal.

About:

YIFF is the ultimate sound server for applications (usually
games) requiring multi client and transparent network IO to
    the sound device.

It uses the Y2 protocol (similar to X11) and the programming
language Ylib to allow easy development of Y client applications.

YIFF is the proven stable sound server with a fully
documented and easy to use programming language.

Subject: bbppp-0.2.0 Blackbox ppp dialer update now available
Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2000 12:32:48 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The latest version of bbppp, version 0.2.0 is now available!
This is the ppp dialer for the Blackbox window manager. It follows
in the minimalist spirit of Blackbox, but at the same time, is
highly configurable.

Please note that version 0.2.0 is written for blackbox version 0.60.1
and above. Users of older versions will still need to use bbppp-0.0.3.

New features now available in 0.2.0 are:

1) A separate label has been added which shows the
kilobytes-per-second transfer rate over the ppp
link.

2) The compact style is now selectable as a
command-line option. No need to recompile!

3) A bug in the compact style has been squashed. The
bbppp window is now sized according to font width.

4) Any combination of button style and labels is now
possible. You can now have a bbppp window as
small as a single compact-style button, or a
combination of all three buttons plus both the time
and throughput labels.

5) Window components can also be stacked vertically,
instead of in a single row.

6) A new option, -notime, will prevent the time label
from being displayed. This will allow you to
substitute the throughput label for the time label, if
so desired (ie, bbppp -notime -thru), or to show
only the buttons (ie, bbppp -notime), or, for the
absolute minimalist, a single button (bbppp
- -compact -notime).

Subject: December updates to plug in scheduler policies
Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2000 12:32:04 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

http://resourcemanagement.unixsolutions.hp.com/WaRM/schedpolicy.html

Changes included:

1.a new benchmark for realtime testing called sched_rr
2.a fix to YIELD code in pset.c which could result in a hang after
cpu assign of a busy cpu on Linux 2.2.16.
3.the release of a multi run queue prototype.

Note that the multi run queue patch is for sched.c only. It will be integrated
with loadable modules and psets as soon as we have final 2_4 bits. Performance
numbers for the multi queue scheduler are provided in a separate white paper.

Watch for our demonstration at the HP booth in the upcoming Linux World!
