Presentation: Using Webmin to run Front Page on Apache
Presenter : Scott Van Singel
On this night you will learn the basics of how to use to Webmin and how
to configure an Apache server to use Front Page. Yes, you read that
right, Front Page. Scott will show the easy use of Webmin and talk
briefly about many of the features it offers. The second part of the
presentation will deal with how to configure the server, where to get
the server extensions, and the steps to complete this process. The wrap
up of the presentation will show how to create a site with Webmin and
how to use the command prompt to configure the server extensions for
Front Page.
Scott served in the Marines for 6 years (so you better pay attention to
his presentation) as a Combat Intelligence Specialist and Assistant
Information Systems Coordinator. Scott gained 4 years experience with
networks prior leaving the Marines and is currently working for Albion
College as their Information and Community Technology Specialist and is
responsible for the community connection to the college network and
technical support. Although Linux is not supported at Albion College
(yet), Scott wanted to get Front Page to work on Apache because his
church needed a web site designed.
A little about Albion College's LAN: Designated server for the community
that has a Web Server, Email (running Ismail 6.04), Calendar, and
Webboard. These systems run are controlled by a single domain (FORKS)
with one PDC running NT 4.0 and one BDC running NT 4.0. There are two
servers using Win 2000 Servers as stand alone; One T-1 for the School
(soon to be two T-1's) and our network is sunbathed with a Cisco router.
We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Call for Papers
===============
Berliner Linux-Infotage, 19th/20th May 2001
As in April 2000 the Berlin Linux-Infodays will take place again in 2001.
There will be a large variety of workshops, live demonstrations,
exhibitions and presentations on Linux and Free Software.
Would you, as an expert and experienced Linux user, like to share and
discuss your experiences with like-minded people, to present your
current project to an interested audience, or would you simply like to
inspire people for Linux?
For the next Infodays in 2001 we have two main themes:
1. Linux as server
This track may show lectures like installation, administration,
performance and security of well-known services - and also
information about new services and their differences to 'old'
implementations.
2. Linux on the desktop
Here we are looking for lectures to the subject desktop in all
flavors. This means everything between usage and configuration of
GNOME or KDE and a report about a single desktop-application.
The main focus should be on well-known and established applications.
Please send your abstract (maximum 20 lines a 80 characters) to
<infotage@belug.org> (contact: Harald Böhme
<boehme@informatik.hu-berlin.de>). Kindly include the following
details:
- title of presentation
- your full name
- your postal and email address and telephone number
- main focus of your presentation
- necessary aids: computer, overhead projector etc.
- any special requirement concerning the time of presentation (only
Saturday or Sunday, only morning or afternoon)?
For each talk/presentation we have scheduled 60 minutes including time
for questions and discussion. In case you are in need of some extra time
for a complex topic or a workshop, please contact the organizer-team for
an individual solution. Please note your time requirement in your
abstract. Travelling and accommodation problems will be solved
individually with every speaker.
We try to publish all lectures on WWW and on a CD, so we need
permission to publication by the authors. A simple way shows the
'GNU Free Documentation License' (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html).
To simplify the publishing we request the scripts in a eletronic form
too.
Deadlines:
- send shorthand by 8th March 2001
- notification of acceptance by 22th March 2001
- send complete script by 19th April 2001
- Linux-Infodays: 19th and 20th May 2001

Call for Papers
===============
Berliner Linux-Infotage, 19./20. Mai 2001
Wie auch schon in den vergangenen Jahren findet 2001 eine
Informationsveranstaltung "Linux-Infotage" in Berlin statt. Dafür
sucht die Berlin Linux User Group (BeLUG) Referenten und
Referentinnen.
eingehen. Hauptaugenmerk für Applikationen sind schon
bestehende und gut etablierte Anwendungen.
Senden Sie die aussagefähige Kurzfassung Ihres Beitrags
(maximal 20 Zeilen a 80 Zeichen) an <infotage@belug.org>
(Ansprechpartner: Harald Böhme <boehme@informatik.hu-berlin.de> ).
Außerdem sollte Ihre Einsendung folgende Daten enthalten:
- Titel des Beitrags
- Ihren vollständigen Namen
- Wie können wir Sie erreichen? Postanschrift, Email-Adresse,
Telefon
- Themenschwerpunkte. Stichpunkte, die den Inhalt am besten
beschreiben
abgesprochen.
Termine:
- Einsendung der Kurzform: 8. März 2001
- Benachrichtigung über Annahme 22. März 2001
- Einsendung des vollständigen Vortrags: 19. April 2001
- Linux-Infotage: 19. und 20. Mai 2001

The next meeting is set for Saturday 9th December 2000, between 1 -
5pm. Same venue as that in the October meeting, the Eisai Lounge which
is
in the grounds of University College London, a short walk from Tottenham
Court Road in central London. This venue will be familiar to you if you
already go to the SAGE-WISE meetings, if you don't then you might want
to look at their map at
<http://www.sage-wise.org/lecture/directions.html> for some excellent
directions. Alternatively, follow my less than excellent directions
below.
********************
The Eisai Lounge is in the UCL campus, off Gower Street, London, WC1.
The nearest tube station is Euston Square, but Euston mainline and
Warren Street stations are only few minutes further walk away.
- From Euston Square station walk along Gower Street, crossing Gower Place
and carrying onto the main gates to UCL, which will be on your left hand
side, a three minute walk at most. These gates lead into a courtyard,
at the far right hand side of which are doors that will lead you to the
Eisai Lounge. It's much easier than I've made it sound and for
reassurance, just ask the guys in the security in the gate house.
If you are coming by car, speak to the guys in the security hut, they
will give you advice on the best place to park at that moment. If you
are bringing equipment they should be able to find you somewhere to park
in the courtyard or allow you to unload at least.
********************
Please email <mailto:gm0912@ql4ever.demon.co.uk> if you are going to
bring your equipment. Since we won't have access to onsite monitors you
will need to bring your own displays if at all possible. If this causes
problems then email monitor request and I will try to arrange for
someone to bring a spare. You will also need to bring your own
extension cables and multiway adapters, ideally labelled with your name,
after all, no one wants to see a fight at closing time over a £5 bit of
wire ;-)
It's going to be a very busy meet, so you really will need to be there
on time. I understand that John Winters will also be with us again with
samples from his Linux Emporium http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/, so
you've all got the chance to spend some money.
*** The days events.
Tigran Aivazian will do a talk on Linux device driver for Intel IA32
Processors micro code update;
Simon Trimmer will do a talk on Wine, VMWare and Win4L.
Richard Jones will do a talk on Net::FTPServer, a full featured, secure,
extensible and configurable FTP server with a database back end, written
in
perl.
I know that we will have a few people doing installs, so the newest of
the newbies can be shown the ropes. If you are looking to install Linux
on a
system that you are bringing make sure that you are prepared to
sacrifice all of the data on the hard disk, back-up your important
stuff, etc.
The meeting will need to end promptly at 5pm, so waste no time.
*** After the meeting.
But it would be a shame for the day to end there and I'm sure you'll all
be thirsty from talking so, after the meeting we will move off to 'The
Playing Fields' bar <http://www.theplayfields.co.uk>, 143 Whitfield
Street, which is a short walk away from the University. From the
university gates turn right - towards Euston Road, the first left into
Grafton Way, continue across Tottenham Court Road then right into
Whitfield Street. Look out for the chalk board sign on the left hand
side of Whitfield Street for The Playing Fields.
