=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
http://BrowseX.com News Release: Sept 26, 2000
BrowseX Systems Inc. announces Beta Release 1.0.x of BrowseX
BrowseX is an Open Source, cross-platform Web Browser written primarily
in Tcl. Tml is our HTML Macro Processor built on top of Tcl; it comes
bundled with BrowseX . Together, BrowseX and Tml are designed to simplify
and enhance Web Authoring without locking you into proprietary formats or
languages. It also includes database client support for Postgres. Lastly,
there is a minor widget collection (Thin) that was assembled to produce
BrowseX .
BrowseX Systems Inc does not sell BrowseX : it's free. We do sell
support, a fast C version of TML and TME: a TML Editor/Compose. See
http://browsex.com/Contacts for more info. Watch for us at
Oracle Open World next week in San Francisco at the
West Coast Interchange/Heavy Lifters booth along with PostgreSQL Inc.
We also plan to be at Comdex in Las Vegas this November.
This Beta release is a shakedown cruise for BrowseX to hopefully work out
residual problems pending the Production 1.1 Release. Although principly
a source code release, binaries for Linux and Windows have been provided.
Overview
BrowseX is a lightweight, but powerful alternative Web Browser written
by Peter MacDonald. It is based upon a modified Tkhtml widget to provide
fast HTML rendering. The remainder of the browser is implemented in Tcl
to achieve both portability and morphability. Meaning, you can easily
change virtually anything to suit your needs, without having to worry
about huge builds, compiles and crashes. BrowseX starts out with most
of the mainstream features of Netscape, but without the fat. What you
will not see are things like Java(script), DOM, CSS, or XML. And even
if you absolutely need these things, BrowseX may still be of interest
for it's Macro Processor, Tml. Here's the highlights:
Highlights
o lightweight: starting at 3.8 Meg and works on a 12M/386 (in X!)
o improved configurability, and tighter integration with Unix
o better fault resilience and crash proofing
o reliable client side scripting via Safe-Tcl
o an embedded Postgres database client, also via Safe-Tcl
o an embedded macro processor: TML. Standalone to!
o less-mouse, and mouse-less operational support
o configuration defaults vary according to available resources
o an Alpha mime-capable mail reader (broken at the moment)
As of this release, BrowseX is very close to primetime. Nevertheless,
considered it a beta release until greater numbers have used and debugged it.
New Features
BrowseX was formerly Alpha-released under the name PDQ. However, as
Qualcomm has recently released a browser/mailer under that name, it has
been renamed to BrowseX or Browse-X . Since being renamed BrowseX has
added the following major new features:
New Features
An Open Source Artistic License Animated Gif support A Macro
Language: TML Removal of binary extensions: Tix, BLT, Tktable
Mostly finished printing support An MS Windows port (as proof of
cross-platform) The 72 Tcl language encodings An installation
script, and self upgrade feature Many configuration/control
options Numerous bug fixes and cleanups Addon programs: vtcl,
tkpaint, tuba, ...
A more complete list is to found here
A Macro Processor
A major goal of BrowseX is to simplify hand written, non-GUI generated
HTML. The TML macro processor provides access to Tcl procedures as
macros. Existing HTML tags are conveniently predefined as TML macros,
making it possible to write documents retargetable other formats, such as
LaTeX. More importantly, tags can be redefined, globally or locally. And
TML can be run standalone to convert TML directly into HTML. All BrowseX
web pages were written in TML, and do this. TML itself is written in Tcl,
however a C version is marketed by BrowseX Systems Inc along with the
Web Authoring TML Editor: TME. For more information see the Tml Docs.
A Database Client
Database access via a Web Server is both a performance bottleneck and a
functionality throttle. Sometimes this is good, but when it's not BrowseX
provides an embedded Postgres database client. This allows client-side
scripts to perform direct database access. Pgaccess can, for example,
be rewritten to be used from SafeTcl.
Self Update
Perhaps the most radical feature of BrowseX is it's ability to update
itself over the Web. Not quite as scary as it sounds, this is just
the equivalent of downloading diff files and running them through
patch. BrowseX determines your current levels and then interacts
with a CVS repository to produce a custom patch for your browser,
automatically. Currently there are three levels to choose from: Alpha,
Beta and Production. Alpha upgrades receive all the latest updates checked
in to the CVS repository. Beta and Production represent progressively
more conservative releases, with Beta being the current default. The
user is prompted once month to check for updates, but is otherwise free
to disable and/or ignore this feature.

Subject: GZigZag 0.1.0 -- A new way of looking at data and computers
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 22:02:43 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
GZigZag is an implementation of Ted Nelson's ZigZag developed by
University of Jyväskylä Hyperstructure Group and other volunteers in
cooperation with Ted Nelson.
ZigZag is a completely new way of looking at computers and how they
can be used. ZigZag provides a uniform multidimensional
hyperstructure for storing data in computers that can be visualised as
a database, a file system or a spreadsheet - but all this generalized
into a unified hyperstructure. ZigZag also provides a potentially
unlimited number of visual views to this data structure. In short,
ZigZag frees the user from the tyranny of windows, files and folders.
GZigZag can be used for many things. It has already been used for
example as a personal information manager and as a presentation tool.
The potential is unlimited.
GZigZag 0.1.0 is the first stable release. It is alpha quality so
many planned features do not exist yet, and many bugs, known or
otherwise, are present. However, it is usable.
GZigZag 0.1.0 requires Java Runtime Environment, version 1.1 or later.
It does not work well in Kaffe due to a bug which appears to be in
Kaffe.
GZigZag has a home page at http://www.gzigzag.org/ .
Download instructions are in http://www.gzigzag.org/download.html .
There are mailing lists; see http://www.gzigzag.org/mail.html .

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I'm pleased to announce the public release of SMSLink 0.48b-4.
This software implements a client / server gateway to the SMS protocol
(the short messages sent to mobile phones). It requires the use of
dedicated hardware, though (a Falcom or Wavecom voice modem GSM module,
which is basically just a GSM with a plain serial port and AT commands
support -- please see the project web page for a list of supported
hardware). Both sending and receiving SMSes is supported. Also included
is a SMS to eMail gateway module. Users are now able to send (short)
emails straight from their mobile phones keypad. Mail delivery to the
GSM is under development.
The server modules only runs under Linux at the present time. The
command-line client already exists for Linux, Solaris and HP-UX (but
could be ported to most any Unix platform, I suspect). A Win32 client is
in the works. The server also supports direct telnet ("interactive"
mode).
Version 0.48b-4 is mostly a bugfix release (see CHANGELOG for details),
it fixes some bugs with the WM02.
PLEASE NOTE: this project is now hosted at SourceForge (see URL below).
This software is distributed under the GNU GPL.
For more information, please visit the project web page at :
http://smslink.sourceforge.net/
Thanks.
