Subject: GNU gengetopt 2.1
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 21:20:16 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

getgetopt takes an easy-to-do description of options and generates a C
function that uses the GNU getopt_long(3) function to parse the options
and validate them. gengetopt is GNU software, but the code generated is
not under any particular license. gengetopt is perfect if you are too
lazy to write all the stuff required to call GNU getopt_long(3), or if
you have a program and wish it took many options. The generated code
works if you use autoconf or automake.

Changes in this release

* It is made more clear that use of gengetopt does not impose any
particular license on the generated code.
* A bug in the generation of code (for some new C++ compilers) was
fixed, thanks to "James R. Van Zandt" <jrv@vanzandt.mv.com>
* Some modifications to the man page, also due to James.
* a directory for examples is specifically created (suggested by James).

cheers
        Lorenzo

Subject: CoreLinux++ 0.4.28 Released
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 21:18:31 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

CoreLinux++ completes Semaphore requirements with addition of the
EventSemaphoreGroup and EventSemaphore class implementation.

General: CoreLinux++ (http://corelinux.sourceforge.net) is an initiative
to normalize methods and conventions for OOA/OOD/C++ development for
Linux, materialized in documentation, OO analysis and design models, and
a set of Open Source C++ class libraries (libcorelinux++ and
libcoreframework++) to support common patterns and exploit the C++
standards.

News: With this release we have completed the Semaphore requirement,
which included class implementations for Mutex, Gateway, and Event
Semaphore Types. In addition, some minor compilation bugs were fixed, as
well as code changes for compatability with gcc 2.96.2.

CoreLinux++ uses the LGPL license to minimize restrictions on
application use and extension.

Plans: With the core library stabalized, we are begining to release
initial passes out our framework abstractions in the libclfw++ class
library, also available from our website. Currently there is only one
framework (Library Load) as the need to define a metatype construct for
type reasoning is taking priority. We are still looking for developers
interested in contributing to this Open Development and Open Source
Software project.

Full details of the project can be viewed from our the home page at
http://corelinux.sourceforge.net where you can also download the source
and documentation.

Subject: SWIG - Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator 1.3a5
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 21:24:29 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

SWIG (http://www.swig.org) is a compiler that integrates C and C++
with scripting languages including Perl, Python, Tcl, Guile, Mzscheme,
and Ruby.

This distribution represents work in progress towards building a new
stable SWIG release. It is available for download on Sourceforge at

     http://download.sourceforge.net/swig/swig1.3a5.tar.gz

What's New? (compared to the `stable' release 1.1p5)

   - SWIG now has a full C preprocessor.

   - Code generation for the Tcl and Python modules has been
     substantially improved both in terms of size and runtime
     efficiency (Perl5 is coming along too).

   - Java module is now included.

   - The Guile module is stable. It represents C pointers as smobs and
     supports the Guile module system and exceptions.

   - Ruby and mzscheme modules added.

   - Testing framework part of the distribution ("make check" support).

   - A lot of minor bug fixes and cleanup.

Here are a few missing features:

   - The SWIG1.1 documentation system is gone and hasn't been
     replaced yet. This is on the long-term to-do list.

   - The Tcl7.x and Perl4 modules are deprecated and no longer
     included.

   - A wide variety of old SWIG command-line options and
     obscure features are gone.

Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 21:29:17 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Just wrote this the other day. It's two bash scripts to ease
converting your old mp3 collection into a brand spanking new ogg
collection.

Currently it's beta, so dont blame me if it messes things up, also
make sure you backup first! (but you always do this, right?)

mom (along with its companion mp32ogg) is available from
http://thenut.dyndns.org/~matthew/projects/mom.shtml

I'm on a modem, so be patient. Please do mirror, but tell me so I can
post its location and save my bandwidth. :-)

Usage is simple:
mp32ogg FILE.mp3 [FILE.ogg]
  - If the output filename is omitted then it changes .mp3 to .ogg and
  uses that.
mom [--delete] [FILES and/or DIRS]
  - Recursively searches any directories if specified.
  - --delete removes the old mp3 file. USE WITH CAUTION.

Other notes:
 * Requires vorbize to encode, and of course an ogg player. Available
   from http://www.xiph.org
 * Although the ogg standard is [pretty much] finalized, and therefore
   files encode correctly, playing and encoding is slow. I recommend a
   minimum of about a 300MHz i386 if you want to play oggs while you
   do other things.
   Also, It'll take a long time to encode. (330MBish took about 2 days
   on my K6/233)

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

PSV is a Postscript/PDF viewer written for the GGI library
(www.ggi-project.org). Since it is written for the GGI, the same
binary can be used to display Postscript/PDF files on

* the Linux console (via svgalib or fbdev GGI targets)
* X windows (using the X target)
* a binary file
* any other GGI target that gets written

The program is small and reasonably fast (as fast as it can be without
requiring a new Ghostscript driver). The sources are at sourceforge,

http://sourceforge.net/projects/psv

It displays only in black and white, which is all I need now. Since my
time constraints are big, this is a stable version, and in principle
new versions will be released only in case of serious bugs or if I
need to add some more functionality for myself. Contributions are of
course welcome, and if someone wants to add some functionality I would
be glad to help as I can, incorporating the new functionality if it
proves the right thing to do.

you decide to come ;-)

We had a lot of fun at the last meeting. We had a PC to configure and
'problem solve'.
During the course of the evening, we installed and configured Apache,
SWAT, Webmin and SAMBA (and DOOM). Not bad for an evening's fun!

If you need anything done to your Linux box but don't quite know where
to get started, bring it along to the meeting.

See you there!

Cheers.

LinuxCertified.com, a leading provider of Linux training, will
offer its next weekend bootcamps on October 14-15th in San Fran-
cisco bay area (south bay). These workshops are designed for
busy information technology professionals and prepare them for
Linux Certification exams.

In addition to carefully designed lecture material delivered by
experienced Linux professionals, there is a heavy emphasis on
hands-on learning. The training starts two weeks before the actu-
al class, with access to an online Linux server, where students
complete few challenging pre-class activities. Attendees get a
powerful Linux laptop on their arrival, along with other class
materials. They load Linux on their laptop during the class, and
use it for all the class activities and assignments. At the end
of the class they take this laptop with them to further enhance
their Linux expertise. Absolute beginners with no UNIX experience
can first come to the popular "Linux for Beginners" class and
subsequently join the certification bootcamp.

Rapid growth of Linux into corporate and government IT environ-
ments is fueling the need for Linux certified professionals. CIOs
and managers are eager to have Linux experts in their organiza-
tions. A certification provides a tangible mechanism for their
hiring evaluation, as well as a means to market the prowess of
organizations.

The weekend bootcamp is specially designed to prepare the atten-
dees for the objectives of Level 1 certification exams offered by
Linux Professional Institute (LPI). The workshop also meets the
objectives of the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam and Sair
Linux & GNU certification (LCA). Our attendees build a strong
sense of community with our instructors, fellow students, and our
network of recruiters and companies looking for Linux consul-
tants.
