                     Wendy Siu
                Sr Software Engineer

                  Vladimir Cotfas
              Linux Software Engineer

             VTech Canada (Richmond, BC)
                http://www.vtech.com/

- -----------------------------------------------------------------

VTech is porting Linux to its popular Helio PDA! In this presentation,
Wendy Siu and Vladimir Cotfas will explain what VTech hopes to
accomplish by porting Linux to Helio and how the Linux community can
both participate and benefit. They will demonstrate Linux running on
both an actual Helio PDA and on a software emulator that is designed to
help shorten the development cycle. They will discuss the
accomplishments of the Helio team to date and discuss their plans for
the near future. Attendees will leave the presentation with a solid
understanding of the issues raised when porting Linux to a small
platform and an appreciation of what it will take to develop Linux
applications software for Helio. If you've been curious about Nano-X (a
lightweight X server intended for use in palmtops, PDAs, embedded
systems) and the W Window System (a simple, socket based, two-color
window system developed by Torsten Scherer), this is the presentation to
attend!

- ------------------------------------------------------------------

About the Presenters:

Wendy Siu is a senior software engineer with VTech Canada Ltd.
Following assignments to VTech Technology Centre in Singapore, Portland
and Hong Kong, she joined the Helios PDA Development Team in March
2000. She currently leads the PDA team in VTech Canada. She received
her B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan in
1995.

Vladimir Cotfas is an Linux software engineer with VTech. He holds a
Diploma in Mathematics/Statistics (equivalent to B.Sc). He is now
adapting the Linux kernel to the Helio hardware and is porting various
applications to the Linux OS. He was formerly a Senior FreeBSD engineer
at NetApp International where he modified the 4.4BSD kernel for a custom
router project. He taught a Course in Linux and an Advanced Linux
Hacking Course while in Romania.

From: "Derek B. Noonburg" <derekn@foolabs.com>
Subject: xpdf 0.91 - a PDF viewer for X
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 09:17:30 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I've just released a new version of xpdf, my Portable Document Format
(PDF) viewer for X.

Xpdf runs under the X Window System on Unix, VMS, and OS/2. The non-X
components of the package (pdftops, pdftotext, etc.) also run on Win32
systems.

Noticeable changes:

* Added TrueType font rendering, using FreeType.
* Support for (some) Chinese fonts.
* Decryption code is included with the main distribution (now that the
US export regulations are a little bit less irrational).
* Added (very basic) support for generating PostScript with Japanese
  fonts.
* Added support for generating EPS files (pdftops -eps).
* Much-improved image filtering in xpdf.
* Implemented a basic full-screen (presentation) mode (xpdf
  -fullscreen).

See the `CHANGES' file for a complete list.

Source (C++ and C) is available, and it should be fairly easy to
compile for UNIX, VMS, OS/2, and Win32.

More information, source code, and precompiled binaries are on the
xpdf web page and ftp site:

    http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/
    ftp://ftp.foolabs.com/pub/xpdf/

Source and Linux binaries are on sunsite.unc.edu, currently in
the incoming directory, but they will be moved to:

    ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/graphics/viewers/X

From: Lorenzo Bettini <bettini@dsi.unifi.it>
Subject: GNU gengetopt 2.0 - getopt command line parser generator
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 09:27:49 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

GNU gengetopt 2.0

This program generate a C function that uses getopt_long function to parse
the command line options, validate them and fill a struct.

Thus your program can now handle options such as:

myprog --input foo.c -o foo.o --no-tabs -i 100 *.class

And both long options (those that start with --) and short options (start
with - and consist of only one character) can be handled. For standards
about short and long options you may want to take a look at the GNU Coding
Standards. The sections which concerns this subject can also be found in
doc directory: standards_14.html and standards_15.html.

gengetopt is free software. Please see the file LICENSE and COPYING for
details. For documentation, please read this file. As it is a GPL program,
we provide sources (~100k), but if you don't fell like compiling it, you
can download Win32 executable (new).

The code generated is not under any license.

gengetopt is perfect if you are too lazy (like me) to write all stuff
required to call getopt_long, and when you have a
program and wish it took options.

Generated code works if you use GNU Autoconf or GNU Automake.

Changes in this release:

- - Gengetopt has become GNU software
- - it is conform to GNU coding standards, and so it uses configure script
generated by Automake and Autoconf
- - it generates separated files: one header file with the struct used to
store command line options information, and a C file which contains the
function which actually uses getopt_long to parse the command line
- - 'required' option is now fully implemented

cheers
        Lorenzo

Subject: RFD for comp.os.linux.trustix
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 09:26:01 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
               unmoderated group comp.os.linux.trustix

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.trustix.
This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time.
Procedural details are below.

Newsgroup line:
comp.os.linux.trustix A Linux distribution: Trustix.

RATIONALE: comp.os.linux.trustix

The rationale for this group follows that the need for a newsgroup
where a user of the Linux distribution: Trustix can go and ask any
question or answer any question pertaining to Trustix. Trustix is a
Linux distribution devoted soley to Servers. Since this Linux
distribution is devoted to Servers I believe it will become very
popular amongst administrators because most Linux distributions
contain files that Servers do not need. Currently, anybody who uses
Trustix does not have any newsgroup to go to. So with that I hope to
launch a newsgroup dedicated to this distribution.

CHARTER: comp.os.linux.trustix

comp.os.linux.trustix is intended to be for the discussion of topics
related to the Trustix distribution. Topics may include discussion
about Trustix, Linux in general, or even the validity of Linux in the
world of MS Windows.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase
of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups
should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue
for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For
Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion
warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How
to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these
documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any
questions about the process.

DISTRIBUTION:

This RFD has been posted to the following groups:

news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
comp.os.linux.announce

Subject: verInfo - version resources for Linux ELF programs
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 08:55:56 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

verInfo is a developer's tool that provides the equivalent
of Windows "version resources" for Linux ELF programs.

You create a plain-text file that describes the data you
want to store in numerous fields, like the program's
version number, the developer's name, e-mail address,
and URL, the license the program is released under,
the release date, etc., and then use the verInfo compiler
(vic) to convert this file into a gcc-compatible asm
source file, which is then compiled with gcc and linked
into your program.

All the data fields are optional, and verInfo is very
economical with space, so it won't unduly inflate the
size of your programs.

verInfo also provides an API that you can use to access
this information programmatically.

Search for "verInfo" on http://www.linuxapps.com, or
go to http://www.gizmodrome.com/verinfo.htm for more
information, the docs, and v0.1.0 of verInfo (currently
available as source code only).

SuSE and CodeSourcery have today announced that they're participating in
porting Linux to AMD's new x86-64 architecture. To coordinate the effort a
website at http://www.x86-64.org has been set up.

We would like to invite everybody to join discussions and coding of the
port. The x86-64 for Linux project has a number of open mailing lists.

The x86-64 web site contains the x86-64 specification, a FAQ, a draft
of the System V ABI and a system-level simulator binaries (coming
soon). A preliminary port of GCC and binutils has been done. The
patches will appear at the end of the month. Expect to see kernel
patches coming up.

From: David Coppit <newspost@coppit.org>
Subject: News Clipper 1.24 Open Source
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 09:07:52 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Description:
- - News Clipper allows web designers to automatically integrate dynamic
information from the Internet into their own web pages. It allows individual
users to create custom newspapers, or businesses to enliven otherwise static
web pages. Its tag language gives users control of data acquisition,
manipulation, and presentation, and can be extended by writing new
  "handlers".

Download:
- - You can now download NewsClipper 1.24 from CPAN:
  http://www.cpan.org/authors/id/D/DC/DCOPPIT/NewsClipper-1.24.tar.gz
- - Until the file propagates to the mirrors, you can use the following URL:
  http://download.sourceforge.net/NewsClipper/NewsClipper-1.24-os.tar.gz

New in version 1.24:
- - Added a lockfile (~/.NewsClipper/lock) that prevents more than one copy of
News Clipper from running at the same time. (LockFile::Simple module now
  required.)
- - Faster verification of handler type during counting of number of installed
acquisition handlers (affects commercial versions only)
- - Decreased dependence on handler server during couting of number of installed
acquisition handlers (affects commercial versions only)
- - Installation no longer requires "make NewsClipper_Cleanup" step
- - Installation now automatically converts older configuration files.
- - Added ExtractTables function to HTMLTools.
- - Non-fatal errors while contacting the handler server are now printed in the
  output as HTML comments.
- - A few speed improvements.

A complete change log is at:
- - ftp://newsclipper.sourceforge.net/pub/newsclipper/CHANGES

Regards,
David
