=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the public release of SMSLink 0.44b.

This software implements a client / server gateway to the SMS protocol
(the short messages sent to mobile phones). It requires the use of
dedicated hardware, though (a Falcom A1 or Wavecom WM01 voice modem GSM
module - which is basically just a GSM with a plain serial port and AT commands
support). Both sending and receiving SMSes is supported. The latest
release also adds a SMS to eMail gateway module. Users are now able to
send (short) emails straight from their mobile phones keypad. Mail
delivery to the GSM is under development.

The server modules only runs under Linux at the present time. The command-line
client already exists for Linux, Solaris and HP-UX (but could be ported to most
any Unix platform, I suspect). A Win32 client is in the works. The
server also supports direct telnet ("interactive" mode).

This software is distributed under the GNU GPL.

For more information, please visit the projects web page at :

http://www.styx.demon.co.uk/smslink/

Thanks.

Ph. A.

Please feel free to forward/post this announcement or pass it around to
your colleagues.

Here are the logistics of the event.

INET 2000
The Internet Global Summit: Global Distributed Intelligence For
Everyone
The 10th Annual Internet Society Conference
18-21, July 2000
Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center, Yokohama, Japan
email: <inet2000@ISOC.ORG>
web: <http://www.isoc.org/inet2000/>

REGISTER AT: http://mc-net.jtbcom.co.jp/inet2000registration/

INET is the premier event in the Internet industry, providing an
international forum for advancing the development and implementation of
Internet networks, technologies, applications, and policies.

The world's Internet leaders meet at INET conferences to exchange
experiences and shape the future of the Internet. INET attendees examine
strategic issues emanating from the Internet's impact on commerce and
finance, education, technologies and societies. INET 2000 presents a
strong technical program with all papers peer reviewed by industry
experts from around the world.

*WHO ATTENDS INET CONFERENCES:*
More than 2,000 decision-makers and networking professionals involved in
extending the use and reach of Internet networks in their organizations
or countries are expected to attend INET 2000. Their roles involve
nearly every aspect of the Internet's development and operations.

*KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:*
- - John T. Chambers, President and CEO of Cisco Systems, Inc.
- - Dr. Ken-ichi Ohmae, international management consultant and creator of
the framework of the borderless economy.

SUPER PANELS:

Super Panel #1: Open Source Movement
Launched in 1985 by Richard Stallman, (GNU), the free source code
movement has blossomed into a broad front of projects best exemplified
by the stunning success of Linux, the Unix-like kernel launched by Linus
Torvalds in 1991. It is now challenging Microsoft's Windows NT in the
server business and is poised to invade the desktop as well. Some call
Linux the Internet Operating System and this is twice true: it could not
have existed without the Internet and a lot of machines that are making
up the Internet run on Linux. Apache, another free source code software,
powers nearly half of all Internet servers in the world. This round
table Super Panel will discuss how these two communities are rapidly
merging into one that may be the real basis for the new net economy.

Super Panel #2: Next-Generation Internet Research Projects: What's New,
What's Next and What Works?
Late-breaking news from Next-generation Internet projects will be
presented. Panelists will address their current status, next step, and
what has led them to success.

Super Panel #3: The Future of the Internet Layer
As the Internet continues to grow, there are increasing stresses and
strains on some of its foundations, such as the original numeric
addressing space and the underlying assumption of transparent
communications. The expected arrival of millions of wireless devices,
and expansion to new, very populous regions of the world, will maintain
or increase these stresses for several decades to come. The Internet
technical community has been aware of this issue for at least seven
years and has carried out various studies and new developments including
Classless Interdomain Routing, Network Address Translation and IPv6. The
panel will discuss all this and more, and attempt to discern where we
are headed next.

PROGRAM THEMES:
- - Internet Infrastructure Technologies
- - Internet Science and Technology for the 21st Century
- - Mobile Internet and IP Network Appliances
- - Interactive, Multimedia, Innovative Contents with Full Demonstrations
- - Bio-Medical Issues
- - Education
- - E-Commerce and E-Business
- - Regulation, Policy and
- - Governance

iGrid2000: LIVE DEMONSTRATIONS: The potential for using global,
next-generation networks to significantly change the way science is
conducted will be showcased at INET 2000, where researchers from around
the world will collaborate in iGrid2000, sharing computing resources and
data over high-speed networks to solve complex computational programs.

Subject: MandrakeSoft buys Bochs for Linux and commits it to LGPL.
Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 11:17:31 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Kevin Lawton is the lead developer of two major software projects
which allow users to run Windows programs on their Linux platform. His
first project "Bochs" is a portable x86 PC emulator, which runs on
most all platforms including Linux/x86 and Linux/PPC. Bochs has been
developed in an open "bazaar" style since its inception in 1994 and
has involved some few hundred developers. Up to now, Bochs has used a
commercial license.

In March 1999, Kevin founded the FreeMWare project now known as «
Plex86 », an open source alternative to the commercial software from
VMware(TM). Plex86 quickly attracted the attention of many users in
search of an open source and high-performance way to run Windows
applications on Linux and other operating systems. There are over 300
interested people on the developer's list. Development of Plex86 is
progressing rapidly, drawing from 6 years of work and a large code
base intersect with the Bochs project.

"MandrakeSoft recognizes the value brought to our Linux users, by
offering them an open source way to concurrently run Windows or other
PC operating systems. We have purchased the Bochs PC emulator, and
committed it to open source. It is a great pleasure to have Kevin as
part of our team, and to support the development of these great
projects", said Jacques Le Marois, President of MandrakeSoft.

"I can't tell you how happy I am to be working for MandrakeSoft. They
really stepped up to the plate for open source. It's a pleasure to be
working with a very progressive team. Great distro! These guys are
the ones to watch", said Kevin Lawton.

Since Bochs has just been commited to an Open-Source license (LGPL),
the Plex86 project can now benefit from source code already
implemented in Bochs. This will speed up the Plex86 development.

Plex86 project can be seen at: http://www.plex86.org
Linux-Mandrake distribution can be seen at:

Subject: KSnuffle 0.5 - network packet sniffer for KDE
Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 11:11:59 GMT
Reply-To: mike@quaking.demon.co.uk

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

NOTE: Versions up to 0.3 had a great big security hole. Anyone using these
      should upgrade!

NEW: The big new addition to 0.5 is plugins to display additional
network information. Write your own, be the envy of your friends
and neighbours. Plugins to display network summary and end-to-end
information are included (oh, and a demonstration plugin to get
      you started).

Version 0.5 is also much more efficient of you have multiple
sniffers pointing at the same network interface.

- -----[The Actual Announcement]----------------------------------------

KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:

        * Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
        * Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
        * Multiple concurrent monitors
        * Command execution on specified events
        * Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
        * Textual display of network traffic
        * Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
        * Parallel display of multiple load histograms
        * Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
        * Support for use by selected non-root users
        * Plugin support - 0.5 contains summary and end-to-end plugins

In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP.

Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.

KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-0.5/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots (currently version 0.4) and other information.

Subject: C++ Programming HOWTO Version 1.0 released
Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 11:10:35 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

C++ is the most widely used language in the world. It
is immensely powerful and runs extremely fast. (C++
runs about 10 to 30 times faster than Java!!)

I had written a HOWTO document "C++ Programming HOWTO"
to help the novice and new-learners. But the HOWTO
will be very useful even to experienced programmers
since it tells you howto avoid memory related problems
in C++. Memory problems bother even the most
experienced C++ programmers and takes away several
days, weeks of debugging time. Sometimes, memory bugs
will be hiding in the code even for several months!!
This howto tells you how to avoid those.

It is located at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/C++Programming-HOWTO.html

and mirror sites are at
