Keywords: LSL, CD, Mandrake 7.0, new releases

                      ---------- o o o ----------

 Wednesday, January 19th, 2000

CHESTERFIELD, Michigan -- Linux System Labs announces the availability of
the latest release of Mandrake 7.0 (Air) on CDR, FREE for a limited time,
via its online and 888-number ordering systems. LSL began offering this
CD on January 19th and interest in this new Mandrake release is reported
to be very high. Preorders are being accepted for the full Mandrake 7.0
Power Pack boxed set for $49.95. See our website for details.

Mandrake made its new release available on January 14th, the first Linux
distribution in the year 2000, and reports the following long awaited
features: a new graphical installer, partition resizing, supermount
included in Kernel 2.2.14, an improved XFree 3.3.6, many desktop
 enhancements, and selectable security levels.

Mandrake 7.0 has joined the ranks with a graphical installer making
installation easy for beginners and old timers, alike. By telling the
installer what type of work environment is needed, it selects the
appropriate packages to fullfill that need, while still allowing the
Advanced and Expert choices to add whatever individual packages you may
desire. The DiskDrake tool allows for easy resizing of existing disk
partitions. Security levels have been added to allow selecting whatever
level of security is neccessary for your environment, from wide open to
fully locked down. A LILO editor takes the pain out of configuring
multi-boot and multi-kernel systems, and an improved XFree86 configuration
has made configuring your video card a snap! The kernel in Mandrake 7.0
is now optimized for installation on Pentium-class machines eliminating
the need to have to recompile for faster machines.

Linux System Labs can be reached at WWW.LSL.COM or by calling our toll
free ordering number 1-(888)-LINUX-88, 9am to 5pm ET - Monday through
 Friday.

Linux System Labs of Chesterfield, Michigan, was established in April 1993
and has been producing and reselling Linux CD's and books ever since.
Most notably: "The Linux Documentation Project", "The Linux Bible",
Slackware Pro, "Dr. Linux", and "Linux Man", along with publishing
numerous CD's for SSC and others. LSL continues to grow its business by
offering its customers the best value available. LSL prides itself as
being know as "The Price Busters!".

Moderator's note:

So, I seem to have been not nearly careful enough in moderating cola
one night, letting a posting containing mostly a personal rant through.
Apologies to those involved, including the readers of the group.

This response to that original message is being posted on the account
of fairness; since the original message was carried on this forum,
the response should receive the same treatment. As far as this newsgroup
is concerned, the matter is finished. I might take the opportunity
here to ask that no one would take the posting of the original message
as encouragement for submitting more messages on mostly personal issues.

Ok, that said, we'll get back to our regularly scheduled announcing...

Original message follows:
- -----------

Hello Mikko.

I just read a post about my site (AppWatch) on comp.os.linux.announce. I
must say I was amazed that such an aggressive personal rant was approved
and sent all around the World without even checking for its authenticity
(I'm a pretty available person, my email addresses are present on every
work I do). At the very least, I feel I have the right for a reply to
such accusations.

Let me start by explaining that I'm the one and only owner of the
AppWatch.com site. I came up with the "AppWatch" name, configured the
server, registered the domain, coded 100% of the backend, work on the
content and tracking, and payed for every penny that was put into the
site. As a Free Software / Open Source developer (you can check my
projects at jdrowell.com, or the unstable branch of Debian), I decided
to make it a FS/OS site. So, not only do I have the technical skills,
but also the full knowledge of the content that is necessary for such a
site, and nonetheless am running the site by myself.

Due to my goal to run a site that announces applications faster than
other sites, I contacted volunteers to help me out with the content.
This way we could have 24h coverage with the tracking process. The work
is quite simple actually, as the site is _very_ automated and leaves
only simple tasks for the content people to perform.

One of those volunteers was Mr. Meunier. His daily personal routine
already consisted of spending 6 hours a day chatting on a local IRC
channel (from 0am to 6am), so he could use that time to approve apps
that were released or add new ones that we agreed upon. The other
volunteers claimed to not have enough free time to help out and left the
project.

After the second month the site started to get some attention due to the
FS/OS model and the quick announcements made possible by the automated
backend. I started to get contacted by companies interested in acquiring
/ sponsoring the site. This was not my initial goal, as I planned to
work on AppWatch as an independent site for at least the first year.
This change introduced a new business part of the site, which I was more
then ready to deal with since I've been a developer for over 15 years
now, which allowed be to gather valuable knowledge both in the technical
and business fields (and also put aside the money to create and maintain
the site on a full time basis).

At this point, Mr Meunier was still helping out on a day to day basis.
Although I valued his help, I had a hard time putting a number on it,
and trying to discuss this over IRC with a person with no work or
business experience proved to be futile. I volunteered to visit him (I
never met him personally) and talk business. He lives in a different
State, so that would mean getting a plane ticket, which I was willing to
invest in. Mr Meunier didn't accept that, on the basis that "I was ugly
and he didn't want to meet me".

- From that point on, very little was agreed upon. I didn't know how to
value his past contribution, as most FS/OS volunteers do it for free (as
I do with AppWatch and my other FS/OS projects). Also, his future
contributions were uncertain, as it was clear that he was not prepared
to work inside a company or as a team.

Mr Meunier has a very complex personality, something of a
passive-aggressive behavior. On his aggressive moods, which started to
show up more and more, he would constantly disrespect me and my loved
ones, over-value his work and under-value mine, and started asking for
unreal amounts of money which I at first thought were jokes. I suddenly
realized that things that I at first thought to be just jokes, like his
constant claims of being a child pornography collector (and using the
nick "pedophile" on IRC), among others, could very well be true.

Not knowing in what to believe, I decided to treat him on a strictly
professional basis. I was dealing with two companies that had solid
offers for AppWatch, were I could keep the site as FS/OS and get some
money and a salary to maintain it. All email was kept open for Mr
Meunier to read and comment on, as a last attempt to make him realize
this was a serious site that was to engage in a professional
relationship with respected companies in the FS/OS community.

After a couple of weeks of negotiation, Mr Meunier, without my approval,
took advantage of his access to confidential information to email the
CEO of that company with his personal flames, demanding that all of his
absurd financial needs be met, and that he would be telling the CEO what
to do with his company. Needless to say, this blew up the negotiation,
and proved that Mr Meunier had no ability or common sense whatsoever to
be part of a professional site.

I proceeded to communicate Mr Meunier that he would no longer have
access to this kind of confidential information, and that he would not
be included in any stock / employment deals as I would not be
responsible for his acts. He was to continue his volunteer work and get
a compensation in case I could close a deal with another company. Mr
Meunier refused to accept this, stopped working, and proceeded to harass
me with his threats of destroying the site.

This situation went on for another two days, at which point I took back
his access rights from AppWatch as a whole. This was actually not the
first time that his access was taken (though it is the last), as he had
other similar fits in the past were he tried to use his access to
publish content to solve his personal vendettas with other people.
Actually, Mr Meunier has been blocked from accessing several sites,
including linuxfr.org (the main Linux site on his home country), which
blocks all access coming from Mr Meunier's ISP due to continued
harassment.

Even though I and Mr Meunier had no business agreement, I offered him a
deal in case I ever sold the site, to compensate him for his efforts,
which at this point were almost balanced by the repercussion of his ill
behavior. He again refused to take the deal, and proceeded to use all of
his full time (Mr Meunier doesn't have a job and has never worked in his
life) to discredit my site.

While all of this is going on, I have been working alone on the site,
providing a valuable service for the FS/OS community. Actually, the
quality and performance of the site have only improved after Mr
Meunier's departure and I'll do my best to keep it that way. I'm in
contact with other people that are interested in collaborating with
AppWatch and have the maturity and professionalism to do so. As for Mr
Meunier, I'm sure he will continue to harass me, as he did and still
does with many other people, but that may be the price to pay for the
bad judgment I showed in taking him in as a volunteer to my project.

All this said, I sincerely hope that people can learn something from
what happened to me in this situation, and to take it with a grain of
salt when presented with similar one-sided stories in the future.

Cheers,
jdrowell

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

This is the announcement of V0.3.4 of 'pi-address',
an X11 based GUI frontend to the address database of a 3Com Palm Pilot.

I switched my master ftp server to a site with much faster
internet connection:

- - ftp://ftp.belug.org/pub/user/mw/pilot/

This is the old master server (now a mirror):
- - ftp://linux.in-berlin.de/pub/pilot/

The (unofficial) Debian package (i386) can be found at:
- - ftp://ftp.belug.org/pub/user/mw/pilot/packages/debian/

The Solaris (Sparc) binary can be found at:
- - ftp://ftp.belug.org/pub/user/mw/pilot/binaries/solaris/

The (unofficial) Solaris (Sparc) package can be found at:
- - ftp://ftp.belug.org//pub/user/mw/pilot/packages/solaris/

An updated version of the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) is already
in place at:

- - http://www.in-berlin.de/User/miwie/pia/

New in 0.3.4:
* Export records in XML format according to a draft of a Document
Type Definition (see file pilot-addresses.dtd). Still experimental!
* Bugfix: tried to read systemwide config file '/etc/pi-address.conf'
instead of '/etc/pi-addressrc' (Thanks to Carsten Wartmann for
  reporting this bug).
* Bugfix: uninitialized buffer during import of PilotManager data files
caused junk characters in category names (Thanks to Peter Corke
  for reporting this bug).

Have fun
Michael

Bored of using the latest kernels, libraries, and window managers?
ELF a little too politically correct for you?

You may be asking ... So, just what ARE you talking about here?
Mastodon is Yet Another Linux Distribution, but it's not like
any of the others. Mastodon offers:

        * Linux kernel 2.0.28
        * Libc 4.8.0 (all a.out, all the time)
        * As much OpenBSD and FreeBSD userland as possible.
        * A completely different /etc/rc.d setup that's almost
          documented.
        * An ascii menu-driven installer
        * A little more paranoia via using tcp wrappers for
          every internet service.
        * Some point and drool administration, all woefully
          undocumented.
        * Everything compiled for the 386 instruction set, so you can
run this on the old 386sx you've got rotting away in the closet.

    All in living a.out color!

And what does this cost you? Many many gray hairs, as the
380mb download (binaries + sources) or 140mb (binaries only)
c-r-e-e-p-s slowly onto your machine. What did it cost me?
About 3000 hours, but it's a small price to pay to keep a.out
alive in the new C millenium.

The hardware requirements are fairly minimal:

8mb memory (4mb used to work, but hasn't been tested for a while)
        IDE disks/cds
        SCSI disks/cd with AHA1542, AHA1740, AHA2940-and old kin,
        Advansys, IN2000, AM53c974, BusLogic multimaster/flashpoint, or
        NCR810 adaptors.
All the video cards that Xfree86 3.3.6 supports.
        Many ethernet cards.
        Serial mice and PS/2 mice.
