Linux keyboards and key caps
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
G-N-U GmbH, a German software service company (see below),
offers Cherry keyboards with keys displaying Tux, the Linux
penguin, instead of an other OS logo:
Cherry G80-3000 (German version): DM 129.00 = EUR 65.96
Cherry G81-3000 (German version): DM 79.00 = EUR 40.40
shipping and handling (Germany): DM 15.00 = EUR 7.67
shipping and handling (Europe): DM 30.00 = EUR 15.34
shipping and handling (world): on request
The lowest row is featured as follows:
Strg Penguin Alt (space) AltGr Alt Penguin Strg
(On German keyboards, "Strg" is printed instead of "Ctrl".)
Other national versions of the mentioned Cherry keyboards are
available on request.
When ordering a G80 keyboard, you have the choice between linear
touch, soft touch, and click. Please specify your selection.
(The G81 keyboard always has a linear touch.)
We also offer single Penguin and Alt key caps that can replace
other OS-specific key caps on the Cherry G80 or G81 keyboard:
1 Penguin or Alt key cap: DM 4.80 = EUR 2.46
2 Penguin plus 1 Alt key caps: DM 13.00 = EUR 6.65
shipping and handling (Germany): DM 6.00 = EUR 3.07
shipping and handling (Europe): DM 10.00 = EUR 5.11
shipping and handling (world): DM 20.00 = EUR 10.23
Prices include VAT. Shipping and handling costs are due only
once per shipment, so you can save money by combining your
orders. In particular, when ordering key caps together with
a keyboard, shipping and handling costs for the key caps are
included in those of the keyboard.
Detailed information including photos is available from our web
site (German only, sorry):
http://www.g-n-u.de/angebot.html#Tasten
Keyboard tables for the Linux console and XFree86 that will make
efficient use of the Penguin keys will be provided soon on our
web site under the terms of the GNU GPL.
Remarks:
* The key caps of the different Cherry keyboards G80, G81,
and G83 are _not_ interchangable, so please specify your
keyboard type when ordering. To distinguish a G80 from a
G81, turn a key cap upside-down. If the cross is centered,
you have a G80, otherwise a G81.
G80 G81
|~~~|~~~| |~~|~~~~|
|---+---| |--+----|
|___|___| |__|____|
* Our key caps are printed in gray like all key caps on modern
Cherry keyboards. Older Cherry keyboards have their key
caps printed black, so our key caps do not match in color.
* When ordering a keyboard, please state whether you wish a
DIN or a PS/2 plug.
Our version of the Linux penguin is derived from the PostScript
version by Neal Tucker, derived from the original version by
Larry Ewing (see http://www.isc.tamu.edu/~lewing/linux/) who
created it using The GIMP (see http://www.gimp.org). We also
used The GIMP to reduce the complexity of the image for a
cleaner reproduction in the size of a key cap. You can download
our version from http://www.g-n-u.de/angebot.html#TastenPinguin
under the same conditions as the original Linux penguin:
Permission to use and/or modify this image is granted
provided you acknowledge Larry Ewing and The GIMP if
someone asks.
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
'rt' is a previewer/editor for Objective-C class documentation, for use on
X windows systems (using Motif or Lesstif).
There's a screenshot of it at,
http://users.pandora.be/stes/rt-screenshot.gif.
Objective-C classes are often documented in .rtf files (for example, the
class Fontchange may be documented in a file Fontchange.rtf), and this
previewer lets you preview and search the documentation, either from the
command line (by typing 'rt Fontchange') or from menus.
'rt' uses double buffered windowing for nice screen updates. 'rt' can
print the documentation in PostScript format. Support for PCL6 is
planned.
Source code is at http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/X/editors in the
file richtext-0.1.5.tar.gz.
Metaverse 0.3-6 Visual Chat Program
Hello,
Here is my latest creation for Linux. It's written in tcl/tk (nothing to
compile).
RedHat RPMS and other forms of packages can be downloaded from the website
at http://metaverse.daytona.com/Metaverse/
The Metaverse is a visual chat program written in Tcl/Tk. The program
connects to any Metaverse server (server and client code included).
The Metaverse is similar to other graphical chat systems like The Palace
and Microsoft Chat with the main difference being that it is much more
OPEN and also runs on a variety of systems including Windows, *nix (Yes
Linux too), Macintosh OS/2 you name it! Anything which Tcl/Tk is available
for should run Metaverse just fine!
Cruise - Enjoy!
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The program tsinvest is for the real time programmed day trading of
stocks. New in version 0.7 is robustness to malformed ticker data-the
- -o, -p, and -P, options. Since the program compiles statistical data
for each stock, it has a pretty good idea of what can be, and can not
be. This is exploited by the -o, -p, and -P options.
The program has a web site at http://www2.inow.com/~conover/ntropix/
- From the lsm:
Title: tsinvest-0.7.tar.gz
Version: 0.7
Entered-date: September 6, 1999
Description: Quantitative financial analysis of equities.
The optimal gains of multiple equity
investments are computed. The program decides
which of all available equities to invest in
at any single time, by calculating the
instantaneous Shannon probability of all
equities, and using statistical estimation
techniques to estimate the accuracy of the
calculated Shannon probability. Entropic
techniques are used throughout. A tutorial is
presented in the man(1) pages. A companion
equity market simulation program is included.
Keywords: financial engineering quantitative analysis entropic equities stocks trading investing
Subject: StegFS - A Steganographic File System for Linux
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 23:11:24 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
StegFS v1.0 is now available for download.
StegFS is a steganographic file system for Linux. It offers security
beyond that afforded by a regular cryptographic file system, since it not
only encrypts data, but also provides a plausible deniability mechanism by
securely hiding the data. It is designed to give the user a very high
level of protection against being compelled to disclose its contents.
StegFS extends the standard Linux file system (ext2fs), allowing normal
and several levels of hidden files to coexist. This allows some data to
remain hidden even if some of the keys are compromised. It also ensures
secure automatic overwrite of all deleted files and does not depend on any
cover text (e.g. images or audio files) like other steganographic tools.
The StegFS homepage and primary download site is at:
http://ban.joh.cam.ac.uk/~adm36/StegFS/
ftp://ban.joh.cam.ac.uk/pub/users/adm36/StegFS/
The design is described in our paper:
Andrew D. McDonald, Markus G. Kuhn: StegFS: A Steganographic File System
for Linux, to appear in the proceedings of Workshop on Information Hiding,
IHW'99, Dresden, Germany, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 1999, LNCS, Springer-Verlag.
Subject: dump/restore 0.4b5
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 23:07:57 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi everybody,
I made a new version of the linux dump/restore suite, mostly bug fixes
and several new options such as automatic end-of-tape detection.
I was unable to contact Rémy Card (the maintainer); he did not respond
to any of my mails. After several months, I decided to release it, and
to promote myself as the new maintainer :)
Here is the ChangeLog:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
1.Integrated the changes from FreeBSD-3.1-RELEASE
(mostly bug fixes, buffer overruns, dump has now an "automatic
tape length calculation" flag, dump/restore can use kerberos now
(this is NOT tested), use environment variables for TAPE and
RMT etc.).
2.Integrated three RedHat patches ("glibc", "kernel" and "bread" patches)
3.Corrected a bug in restore when using 'C' option with multi-volumes
tapes (files splited accros two tapes give "size changed" errors
when comparing).
4.Corrected the long standing bug when dumping multiple tapes.
This works for me, needs further testing.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The new version should be visible soon on tsx11, meanwhile you can get
it on my web page: http://perso.cybercable.fr/pop
Happy dumping!
Stelian.
The large variety of different character sets currently used is a big
hassle. Unicode promises to be an elegant solution out of this, and
using the ASCII-compatible UTF-8 encoding, it is very feasible to use
Unicode in a POSIX environment. However, a bit of work is still
necessary before UTF-8 can be widely deployed under GNU/Linux and
XFree86.
If you are interested in working towards better support of Unicode/UTF-8
under GNU, X11, Linux, FreeBSD, and similar POSIX environments, then
please join the new linux-utf8 mailing list. The list is also a good
