Subject: DIPC (Distributed IPC) 2.0 is available

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

 This is to announce that version 2.0 of DIPC (http://wallybox.cei.net/dipc)
for Linux is available now. DIPC can be used to build and program clusters
(multi-computers) very easily, and provides distributed program developers
with semaphores, messages and Transparent Distributed Shared Memory (DSM).

 The following are some of the features in DIPC 2.0:

 *) In addition to i386 and m68k, it now supports PowerPC, MIPS, Alpha and
    SPARC processors.
 *) There is a considerable speed increase in DIPC's Distributed
    Shared Memory operations.
 *) The code is SMP-friendly.
 *) Compiles under glibc 2.1 and libc.
 *) Is easily usable on clusters with diskless machines.
 *) DIPC Is GPL, so you can do any modifications you may like, for example
    to adapt it to any custom distributed programming hardware you may have.

 The file dipc-2.0.tgz, containing the complete source code and documents,
can be obtained by anomymous FTP from wallybox.cei.net, in directory
/pub/dipc. Alternatively, it can be downloaded from sunsite.unc.edu, in
/pub/Linux/system/network/distrib.

 Here is DIPC's LSM file:

Begin3
Title:          DIPC (Distributed Inter-Process Communication)
Version:        2.0
Entered-date:   20SEP99
Description: DIPC enables you to build and program distributed
                (multi-computer) systems very easily. It works by
                making System V IPC mechanisms (shared memories,
                semaphores and messages) network transparent.
Keywords: distributed parallel programming multi computer cluster

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the release of LEAP v1.2.5.1

LEAP is a free RDBMS that is used as an educational tool in Universities
around the world to aid the students as they learn database theory.

Full details are available on the LEAP web page:

http://www.dogbert.demon.co.uk/leap.html

LEAP is entirely free (it is distributed under the terms of the GNU
General Public License), and is very easy to install. All distributions
contain the full 'C' source code. Versions exist for all Unix
implementations, and recently a Windows 95/NT GUI is available. Full
documentation is, of course, included in the distribution.

This particular version of LEAP is primarily a bug-fix release. RedHat
6.0+, and AIX users were unable to compile without some manual
intervention.

LEAP can be downloaded from the SunSite archive, and the Demon FTP
server:

ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/compsci/databases/leap/leap-1.2.5.1.tar.gz
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/database/relational/leap-1.2.5.1.tar.gz

The web site of course includes links to these, and other web sites
where LEAP is mirrored.

Regards,

Richard Leyton.

MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Sat., 25 September 1999, 13:00 to 15:00 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

  The main presentation

1. Paul Hostetler will discuss his project for determining status
   for the collection of hosts, based on procmail, MySQL, PHP, CRON, with
   bit of scripting. The package is a Client-Server, low-overhead,
   multi-platform remote host monitoring group of utilities.

   The package is not yet named; On the server side, Apache and mod-PHP
   are used to display stats in a user-acessible form. It is in the
   vein of Big Brother without the serious overhead.

and, a potpourri of topics

2. There'll, no doubt, be a smattering of local `Experts' to
offer their thoughts for `general Q and A's, describing
varied techniques for `dog-licking-cat' Linux/unix high-level
problem solving in more newbie-friendly terms. [`dog-licking-cat'
in the sense that local gurus and wizards need to remember to carefully
explain their thought process in `solving' an issue -- to a `newbie'
saying `RTFM MAN 1 PASSWD' is pretty opaque, in solving their simple
question on `how do I change my password?'.]

  (Bring in a sick chassis and related parts, and it may well go
  home functional!)

3. Finally, and such as we ever have a `formal' business part of the
meeting, it will follow the presentations.

  As always (both with the informal nature of the group's `management'
and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules), the agenda and
content are subject to change.

               Seventh Issue of the "Brave GNU World", the
               monthly GNU forum, is online now
                                -- Georg Greve

Hi !

The seventh issue of the "Brave GNU World" column is online
now. It can be found on the GNU Webpage and its mirrors
or follow the links at the end of this posting.

The "Brave GNU World" is a multilingual (English, German, French,
Japanese and Spanish) monthly column that provides information about
internal developments of the GNU Project and things of importance to
the GNU community, while trying to give insights into the underlying
philosophy. It is available online (see links below) or printed in
Germany´s biggest GNU/Linux magazine, the "Linux Magazin".

If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist. Just
send mail to <brave-gnu-world-request@gnu.org> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 4
mails a month).

The seventh issue covers the following topics:

 * gcj                  ( a gcc frontend for Java )
 * GNU Pth ( _real_ POSIX Threads for _all_ Unix systems )
 * GNU Shtool           ( a helper for autoconf )
 * GnuPG ( reliable cryptography for everyone )
 * Mailman              ( easy & comfortable mailinglist maintenance )

This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you

 * have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
   interest

 * have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile

 * would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
   start it with

 * think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves

 * would like to see something made public

send mail to:

        "Brave GNU World <column@gnu.org>"

This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software,
so don´t hesitate to contact me if your project is under the
GPL/LGPL and you´d like to see it introduced here.
