=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello to all Linux fans.

I put hands on my 6yrs old TETRIS playing algorithm.
The new style appears to me even more dumb than
before, but it scores! While the old strategy could
hardly get to 5000 points, the new algorithm easily
picks up 20K, while being a bit lucky it can get to
above 50K. It personal record is 80,304, while on
your machine it probably can score more.
Please, tell me when it gets to 100,000 :-)

Other new features of ITETRIS release 1.6.0:

Configuration script with all you need to provide a
safe installation. It automatically skips installation
of a particular (svgalib or X11) version if corresponding
files are missing. Similarly it disables joystick support
if the header file is not found. With this 'innovations'
I expect the game to install without any difficulties on
any Linux machine, and even in a non-Linux
environment (BSD, Solaris, Irix, etc).
At the same time, you will be surprised to find all
old manual configuration facilities still available.

Loop background music - a small gadget, that
restarts the tune, if it finishes before the end of level.
It was meant to be a part of the very first Linux release
however at that time I was distracted by other issues,
related to background music. Looping remained in
rudimentary stage untill version 1.6.0 when a long
playing period for the robot, made it absolutely
necessary.

Thanks to all for your support of ITETRIS. Its home
page was meant to be a R.I.P. to my first serious
Linux-based application, but a vivid interest to it
was a source of my new inspiration.

See you at ITETRIS home page:

http://www.alphalink.com.au/~michg/ace/itetris

P.S. Does anybody know how to program xf86Jstk.so ?
This is how xitetris joystick support could become
completely independent of UNIX type. So far I couldn't
find even a header (.h) file !

Subject: The Mops0.42c - free 3D modeling environment
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:26:00 GMT
Reply-To: Randolf Schultz <rschultz@informatik.uni-rostock.de>

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

The Mops got fatter again.

What is The Mops?

The Mops is a free 3D modeling environment written in C with Tcl/Tk.

See The Mops Home Page for more information:

http://www.informatik.uni-rostock.de/~rschultz/mops/

Whats new?

- - Added two options to the mopsrc ("mainGeom" and "toolBoxGeom")
that allow to set the geometry of the main window and the toolbox
  on startup.
- - Handling of providing objects and instances improved, it is now
possible to e.g. revolve instances of NURB curves, and even instances
  of NURB curve providing objects.
- - Since using instances as childs of e.g. the Revolve custom object
breaks automatic notification, you can now force the notification
of selected objects, or all objects in the scene, using the new
  command "forceNot".
- - Added a procedure "printHotKeys" that creates a pretty listing
of the current hot key configuration for printing as reference sheet.
- - Added mouse wheel support (Unix only) for views (zooming) and the
  main window (scrolling).
- - Added RIB-export option "RIStandard" that determines whether
non RI standard options/attributes should be written into the RIB.
- - Added a new command "splitNC" that splits a NURB curve at a given
parameter value into two new curves using knot insertion.
- - When switching from a perspective view to a parallel view The Mops
keeps the zoom factor of the view now.
- - Create-TrimRect creates now a simple closed rectangular curve, when
the current level is not inside a NURBPatch.
- - All Mops windows may be iconified at once using the new shortcut
  "Ctrl+z" (procedure: "hideMops").
- - The toolbox has now much more buttons with nice icons and tooltips.
- - Added a new command "refineNC", which refines the knot vector
  of a NURB curve.
- - Added a new command "projectNC", which projects a point in space
  on a NURB curve.
- - Added a new command "elevateNC", which elevates the degree of
  a NURB curve.
- - 3DMF export can now export instances (but resolved!) and objects
that provide e.g. NURB patches or NURB curves (revolve, sweep etc.).
- - Added a new custom object named "Skin", that replaces the old
"build from curves". In contrast to "build from curves", "Skin"
is able to deal with curves of arbitrary length and order!
- - Added "LazyNotify" preference setting. If this is enabled the
interactive modeling actions will do the notification just once
on release of the mouse button.
- - Added new command "clampNC" that clamps the knot vector
  of e.g. a B-Spline curve.
- - Added a new mode of interpolation (Global4D) to the ICurve custom object.
- - Added a new action FindU, that returns a certain parametric
value on a NURB curve according to a picked point on that curve.
- - Added a SplitCurve action, that splits a NURB curve at
a picked point on the curve.

From: Martin Evans <martin@easysoft.com>
Subject: COMMERCIAL: Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge public beta
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:23:09 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Easysoft Ltd would like to announce the fourth public beta of the
ODBC-ODBC Bridge for Linux. The ODBC-ODBC Bridge is a package of
libraries which provide applications on Linux with access to ODBC data
sources on remote machines. Examples of using the ODBC-ODBC Bridge
are:

[1] Apache/PHP + the ODBC-ODBC Bridge (running on Linux) to read/write
data held in Microsoft SQLServer on NT.

[2] Perl + DBI + DBD:ODBC + the ODBC-ODBC Bridge (running on Linux) to
read/write data held in a Microsoft Access database on NT.

[3] As above but with Python's mxODBC, RExx/SQL or any C application.

[4] Access from StarOffice or Applixware on Linux to remote ODBC
    databases.

[5] Acces to any remote ODBC compliant driver.

The Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge provides the full ODBC 3.5 API
specification and also includes parts of the ODBC 2.0 API now
deprecated in ODBC 3.0/3.5. This allows the application developer to
link directly with the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge client without the
requirement to install a driver manager on the Linux client (although
you can do if you want).

Changes since the third public beta include:

[1] Support for Windows 2000 and Office 2000.
[2] HP-UX/PA-RISC version now available.
[3] SCO OS version now available.
[4] The previously alpha block-fetch-mode is now at the same status
as the OOB itself (beta). It is now perfectly safe to use a
BlockFetchSize of 1 from any application without concern for
cursors and in fact the OOB is normally faster with
BlockFetchSize=1 than without block-fetch-mode at all.
[5] The Windows version of the OOB Server now contains an integral HTTP
server which can be used to:
1.display statistics on OOB Server access
2.display a list of system DSNs
3.show and change the OOB configurable parameters.
[6] All the metadata functions have been speeded up .
[7] The transfer of bound parameters from the client to the server is
    a great deal faster.
[8] Network speedups.
[9] If you have the unixODBC Driver Manager installed then the OOB will
automatically install itself under unixODBC if you wish.
[10] Support to/from Rexx/SQL.
[11] ODBC fixed and variable length bookmarks are now supported.
[12] Further ODBC 2.0 functions were added (SQLSetScrollOptions and
     SQLGetStmtOption.
[13] ODBC API SQLAllocHandleStd now supported.
[14] There are new DSN attributes, MetaData_ID_Identifier,
MaxBookMarkSize to work around application problems and
     Description (see the Changes.txt file).
[15] The OOB Client now contains the SQLDrivers and SQLDataSources APIs
so it may be used with Perl DBD::ODBC 0.21.
[16] The NT OOB Server may be set up to create a new process to handle
each connection instead of a thread for each connection (the
default). This may be used with ODBC drivers that are not
     thread-safe.
[17] Support for Unicode SQL types.
[18] More documentation (although not the full PDF and HTML set yet)
     including a basic FAQ.
[19] Various bug fixes
(see the Changes.txt file in the distribution for more
     information)
[20] A new beta expiry date of 1st December 1999

Existing users of the ODBC-ODBC Bridge should uninstall the previous
version before installing 0.4.0.0 (this is especially important on
Windows operating systems). As before, you must match your client and
server versions during the beta releases as previous clients/servers
will not work with the latest beta release (See the FAQ in the
distribution for the reasons why).

Beta testing of the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge is progressing very well
and Easysoft would like to thank all those people who have downloaded
the ODBC-ODBC Bridge and provided feedback. Easysoft strive to make
their products the best in their field and beta testing is helping us to
achieve this goal.

See http://beta.easysoft.com/html/odbcbridge/odbcnew.html for a full
list of changes.

The fourth public beta of the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge may be
downloaded from:

http://beta.easysoft.com or

ftp://ftp.easysoft.com/pub/beta/odbc-odbc-bridge/

For information on other released Easysoft products please see our

From: Carlo Wood <ca231196@runaway.xs4all.nl>
Subject: prototype-1.1 - Extremely easy projects Makefile generator
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:27:52 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Description
- -----------

The "prototype" package helps you with generating Makefiles.
The aim of this package is to make it *extremely* easy to create
new projects, consisting of multiple directories with lots of
Makefiles - almost without the need to edit any Makefile at all.

The "prototype" package only works together with GNU make and
gcc/g++ (or egcs). Only the Best is good enough :). Obviously this
is not a problem on linux - it does make your projects less portable
  though.

Background
- ----------

The "prototype" package has been used for a few years for a large
C++ project. It has hardly been tested for C projects though.
Hopefully this new version will support C sources (*.c) equally well,
as it should work with a mixture of C and C++ sources.

Environment variables
- ---------------------

In order to use "prototype", you need to define two environment
  variables: PROTODIR, the path to where prototype was installed;
and CPPEXT, the C++ source file extension you use.

Installation
- ------------

There is an rpm available. But, if you use the tar-ball then all
that is actually need is a `make install'.
The package comes with a './configure' just to allow the --prefix
in order to install the package in a non-default place (for instance
  when you don't have root).

After installation you might want/need to edit $PROTODIR/Makedefs.h
  once.

Example
- -------

To clarify the simplicity that was aimed for, consider the following
example which creates a project that exists of a shared library with
a function that prints 'Hello World' and an executable that links
with this library and calls its function:

mkdir hello
cd hello
makeproto
mkdir hello
mkdir libhello
# Of course, you should normally use an editor for this one:
# (Adding "-L../lib" to LDFLAGS)
mv Makedefs.h Makedefs.h.tmp
sed s%'^#LDFLAGS+=.*$'%LDFLAGS+=-L../lib% Makedefs.h.tmp > Makedefs.h
rm Makedefs.h.tmp
cd hello
makeproto main
# Another "editor" session:
# (Adding "-lhello" to SHAREDLIBS)
mv Makefile Makefile.tmp
sed s%'^SHAREDLIBS=$'%SHAREDLIBS=-lhello% Makefile.tmp > Makefile
rm Makefile.tmp
echo 'extern void hello(void);' > hello.cc
echo 'int main(void) { hello(); return 0; }' >> hello.cc
cd ../libhello
makeproto lib
echo '#include <iostream>' > hello.cc
echo 'void hello(void) { cout << "Hello World" << endl; }' >> hello.cc
cd ../hello
make
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=../lib hello

The result of the last two commands:

From: Julian Seward <Julian_Seward@muraroa.demon.co.uk>
Subject: bzip2 0.9.5d -- a lossless data compressor
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:22:43 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am pleased to release bzip2, version 0.9.5d. This is the first
major release since the previous stable version, 0.9.0b/c.

Version 0.9.5d is fully forwards and backwards compatible with all
previous bzip2 releases and .bz2 files.

bzip2 is a portable, lossless data compressor based on the
Burrows-Wheeler transform. It achieves good compression and runs on
practically every (32/64-bit) platform in the known universe. It's
open source, with a BSD-style license. The compression engine is also
available as a library, should you desire a programmatic interface.

Thanks to the kindly folks at Cygnus, bzip2 now has a new home:

   http://sourceware.cygnus.com/bzip2/

Source, binaries and documentation are available from there. The
sourceware FTP server is often busy, so you might like to try one of
the mirrors listed in http://sourceware.cygnus.com/mirrors.html.

WHAT'S NEW IN 0.9.5 ? (executive summary)

Nothing radical. Mostly a slow evolution into a more robust,
useful tool.

   * Compression speed is much less sensitive to the input
data than in previous versions. Specifically, the very
slow performance caused by repetitive data is fixed.
   * Many small improvements in file and flag handling.
   * A Y2K statement.

WHAT'S NEW IN 0.9.5 ? (longer version)

Major change: added a fallback sorting algorithm (blocksort.c)
to give reasonable behaviour even for very repetitive inputs.
Nuked --repetitive-best and --repetitive-fast since they are no
longer useful.

Minor changes: mostly a whole bunch of small changes/
bugfixes in the driver (bzip2.c). Changes pertaining to the
user interface are:

allow decompression of symlink'd files to stdout
decompress/test files even without .bz2 extension
give more accurate error messages for I/O errors
   when compressing/decompressing to stdout, don't catch control-C
read flags from BZIP2 and BZIP environment variables
decline to break hard links to a file unless forced with -f
allow -c flag even with no filenames
preserve file ownerships as far as possible
make -s -1 give the expected block size (100k)
add a flag -q --quiet to suppress nonessential warnings
stop decoding flags after --, so files beginning in - can be handled
resolved inconsistent naming: bzcat or bz2cat ?
   bzip2 --help now returns 0

Programming-level changes are:

fixed syntax error in GET_LL4 for Borland C++ 5.02
   let bzBuffToBuffDecompress return BZ_DATA_ERROR{_MAGIC}
fix overshoot of mode-string end in bzopen_or_bzdopen
   wrapped bzlib.h in #ifdef __cplusplus ... extern "C" { ... }
close file handles under all error conditions
added minor mods so it compiles with DJGPP out of the box
fixed Makefile so it doesn't give problems with BSD make
fix uninitialised memory reads in dlltest.c

Penguin Fetish website has moved to a proper server in the UK!

We can now be found at the following:

http://www.penguin-fetish.co.uk

The site has had a major overhaul, is a lot faster and now has a lot more
information pertaining to our Afterglow project. (A massive space adventure
for Linux.)

We are currently recruiting "voices" for parts in the game so if you think
you'd like to try a shot at the -little- time, why not drop us a sample!
This is an Anglo-US-European co-production so don't be afraid if you have an
accent: it might be just what the director ordered!
