Hi everybody!
I've been reading the posts on apo-l about SGA and APO (endorsements) and,
as the Executive Vice President of the ODU SGA, I feel I can answer this qu
question. When I ran for office last march/april, I ran against two other
people. It was the most contested race for a VP position in two/three
years! When seeking endorsements, I went first and foremost to the support
I had within the other student leaders of large student organizations (not
fraternities, however). I went to organizations like the Student Activities
Council and the honor Council, WODU (radio station), and the resident and
commuter student organizations. This is because they are the most all
inclusive, and tend not to "alienate" anyone. I did seek support from the
fraternities and sororities, but not endorsements. We did have one candidate
running for President that was endorsed by the Interfraternity Council. He
lost, though. Most fraternities (individual) generally do not want to endorse
candidates. I did discuss endorsements with our chapter president, and we both
agreed that because APO is a non-political organization, we felt it was not
necessary. However, even though the Chapter cannot endorse a candidate,
the individual members can support a candidate, and help out with the campaign.
Just be careful not to mention alpha phi omega.
Another important factor is President Bill Clinton's campaign. If you noticed
the Clinton Campaign, Bill never mentioned Alpha Phi Omega once. He may have
mentioned his membership in the organization, but no endorsements were made.
He hardly mentioned the fraternity at all. I think that SGA offices are
very similar, just because you need to be elected, and basically all elections
are the same. Therefore, I do not think an Alpha Phi Omega Chapter should
endorse a candidate. However, it is still of UTMOST IMPORTANCE to support
a candidate through other means (that is, if you want this person to get
elected).
