Dear Brothers,
There has been some debate in my chapter lately over how pledges are
voted into active membership prior to activation.
It is tradition in my chapter that each pledge come to the voting
meeting with a personal letter addressed to the chapter. Each pledge goes
before the chapter individually to read their letter and to answer any
questions active brothers may ask of them. Pledges can then be voted on
individually.
Often, voting meeting tends to be long. Voting in pledges is done in
addition to all the other normal chapter business. This can be done.
Michigan Technological University is not a large school, so the largest pledge
class I've ever heard of was 15 pledges. Still, acknowledging each pledge
individually takes time.
Currently, our chapter by-laws allow an alternate method of voting.
This method allows the entire pledge class to be voted in as a whole. As near
as I can figure, the reasoning behind this is to save time. A simple majority
is all that is required to use this method, but a 90% vote is still needed to
vote in the pledge class.
Some actives prefer this method.
Some actives do not like it.
I'm interested in hearing how other chapters vote in pledges.
