Any group, organization, fraternity, club, team,...whatever, assembles for
a reason. The reason for the assemblage of a chapter of Alpha Phi Omega
should follow our goals: the Cardinal Principles, the Twelve Points,
the Scout Oath. APO has long encouraged "service...as participating
citizens." Clearly, support of the democratic process and the selection
of student government is supported and encouraged by APO.
But support of the democratic process also implies support of the right of
each individual to decide and vote their conscience. "Duty to self..." is
part of our belief.
As with most issues, the problem is finding the proper balance between
conflicting beliefs. Extremism in any direction tends to be destructive.
Values must be prioritized. It is not easy. It takes both compassion and
intelligence. In the end, moderation and compromise will always be
necessary.
I propose the following: APO as a whole should not endorse any specific
candidate. But individual members of APO may express their opinions however
it is appropriate. If the Chapter President chooses to endorse Candidate A
and the Treasurer chooses to endorse Candidate B, both opinions should be
respected. In this case, I feel the guide should be support for democracy,
free speech, and respect for individual opinion.
