I've read your suggestions for both the time and place for the 1996 National
Convention. We're getting ready to look at several potential sites for the
Convention here in Region X...
Las Vegas could be a potential site; the problem is that the closest chapter
is about four hours away (either Arizona or Southern California). We have
no chapters in Nevada at this time.
San Diego; there has been some interest expressed in San Diego as a potential
site, but again we have few chapters in the local area (one chapter and one
petitioning group).
San Francisco; SF is a perennial favorite, but the hotel rates will likely be
expensive ($60-80 per night).
Oakland; the Oakland Convention Center has been calling our Regional
Director on a regular basis to see if we are still interested in using their
facilities for a convention. I imagine that we'll check into them again.
Sacramento (my personal favorite, since it's where I am); the hotel rates
would be great, but I don't think we have a hotel that could easily
accommodate a National Convention.
Seattle; Seattle would be a great place for a convention I think, but we have
only one chapter in the local area, and the next closest chapter is about
five hours away.
My personal belief is that the San Francisco Bay Area is our best bet for the
1996 National Convention, but that's my own personal opinion and is not based
on any extensive research into accommodations. We're going to start meeting
soon to try to narrow down our alternatives.
As far as time goes, the winter stretch really is our best bet for hotel
rates. Many of the hotels are desperate for business between Christmas and
New Year; they often have plenty of tourists during the summer to fill their
hotels at least 2/3 full and therefore can charge higher rates.
Anyway, just my personal observations. Thanks for the ideas!
