Service Hours again, eh?
My experience with service hour requirements is the following:
(1) requirements are NOT unique to Alpha Phi Omega. I have been member
of several "social good" organizations since I was in middle school,
and every group had it share of slackers, super-members, and normal
people.
(2) The point is NOT service. Sounds odd, right? The point is actually
commitment to the organization. In this case, Alpha Phi Omega's main
principles include Service, but a brother can slack in other ways. I
would consider a brother to be slacking if they consistently didn't
follow through on promises.
(3) There are as many solutions as there are groups. In our case, this
means that every chapter may have a different solution. Every chapter
is different. As a national fraternity we can only set a MINIMUM for
our requirements - this has been done. Each chapter must consider
number of members, the climate at school (for example, don't require
hours during finals week), the current situation of the chapter, etc.
There are so many factors!
(4) No amount of preaching will change some people's minds.
Just some general rules to keep in mind. It's really easy to get
emotional about service hours, especially when someone feels that it
threatens the spirit of our Fraternity. Any requirement for
attendance, service hours, signatures, dues, etc., is nothing but a
way to measure how much someone is giving to the organization. If you
see a slacker, you can point out that they're not up to par on these
standards. If you see someone hurting themselves by doing too much
(the "super-brother"), you can tell THEM that they are doing too much.
Good luck,
