In Xi chapter, Iowa State University Ugly Man on Campus competitions
were held back in the 1950's. A few years back I found myself going
through Iowa State campus newspaper archives and came across what I
thought one of the best UMOC competitions around.

The contest was never based on physical appearance and students and
faculty actually sought after the title of Ugly Man. Contestants
collect money (buckets of spare change) and whoever raised the most
money won the title.  All proceeds were donated to the March of Dimes;
the article stated that over $1500 was raised during this particular
competition.

The article detailed one stunt that a person used to raise money; he ate
live goldfish for a crowd of people (not the crackers). The UMOC
competition was a yearly event and a brass spittoon was used as a
traveling trophy.

I was never involved in a UMOC competition, but I researched my chapter
history in the National Office Archives. This is what I gathered
from the photos and the articles. Apparently it was a big event at
Washington University in the 1940's and 1950's before the chapter went
inactive. Each fraternity and college department selected one man to
represent the group and a goofy photo was taken. The students then voted
with money (a penny wars competition with a penny representing one vote)
who was the Ugly Man on Campus. All of the money then went to the
charity
of APO's choosing.

Hope this helps!
