Epsilon Zeta (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute- Section 88, Region II) has
been running Meanest Man On Campus (MMOC, pronounced MEE-Mock)since 1957.
The project has been running biennially since then with the exception of
some UMOC campaigns in the 1960s. (Rumor/folklore has it that things got
"too ugly" so they went back to MMOC around 1969). I chaired the event in
1991 when we raised about $2500 for Unity House- Families in Crisis. The
record is believed to have been close to $5000 in 1989 for Pahl House.
At a non-APO-related wedding I went to this past August 31 on Long Island, I
struck up a conversation by chance with a man named Ed Weisselberg, who was
an alum of RPI, the fraternity, and was president back in the late 50s. He
also was the founder of the MMOC campaign at our school.
The conversation went like this:
Ed:"Where do you live"?
REV:" Troy, NY"
Ed:"Ah, i went to school there- RPI!"
REV "Same here..."
Ed:"Ever hear of Meanest Man on Campus?"
REV: "My fraternity runs it and I chaired it once."
Ed: "I started it!"
...and the rest of the conversation went from there.
