Sorry it took me so long, but here's some tips I got from the Canadian
Consulate General's partnership in technology 8 years ago that I think are
still relavant:
1. Make sure that a partnership is complementary, not rival. Unless you
think the market is big enough to allot for both of your organizations (in
economics, its called an unsatisfied market, in APO think of it as having
enough brothers and members for both types of organizations)
2. A reason for the partnership (purchasing, membership gain,
co-advertising, etc.) should eixst, and probably in writing. Make sure
everybody understands why there is such.
3. REquirements. Make sure people are doing for each other (mutual event
attendance, co-advertisng, etc.) and not just for themselves, paying lip
service only.
4. Include a sunset clause, allowing for groups to part friends. Sometimes,
frienships are better without formalities. The key is to make sure all sides
are happy.
5. Allow for growth and recognize that because membership in any college
organization is in flux, be sure that peopleunderstand why there is a
partnership.
Some good examples in my APO career: Epsilon Sigma (SUNY Buffalo), my home
chapter, used to be active within IGC (Greek Council) as a voice only
member. Later, APO was very active in Student Association, until an argment
over accounting (APO needed a separate bank accont - long story) led to us
leaving. All of these agreements were originally designed to further APO,
but they had a time when they were no longer effective.
Also, keep in mind that all agreements should be within university codes,
and applicable state and local laws. Most campuses have free or low-cost
legal services if you really feel youneed it, but in most cases, this is
completely unnecessary. Just spell out what you want nd be clear in
understanding and language.
