5) Employers may strip attachments out of their employees' e-mail, which
   would make it difficult for alumni to participate.

6) Users of free e-mail services have limited mailbox sizes, and I know
   several that run near the limit.  If we move to HTML, we will be
   using more of their available space, and that would be encouraging
   them to unsubscribe.

The long and the short of it is that there is no compelling reason to move to "rich text".  There are far more disadvantages than advantages.
