There are many parts of this letter to which I'd like to respond, but =
I'll limit myself to two.
First, as I indicated yesterday, this is a STUDENT fraternity, not =
solely an undergraduate fraternity. Let us please remember that =
STUDENTS are the driving force, both graduate and undergraduate.
Second, it is possible to disagree with your Brothers and still care =
about them. It is possible, for example, to say that you don't like the =
thought of single-gender chapters on co-ed campuses, and yet still care =
about those who do want them. Your message seems to imply that it's one =
or the other. Please don't presume that because someone opposes =
single-gender chapters that they oppose or dislike the members who =
support those chapters. That isn't the case at all.
I pledged in the fall of 1994, long after all this happened. But I find =
it hard to believe that, 26 years later, we're still having this same =
debate. We are a national organization with national standards. If =
that standard is that chapters have to be open in membership to the =
campus, that's the deal. What is it that people want? Do they want to =
allow all-male chapters again on co-ed campuses? I have yet to hear ONE =
person say anything other than, "I want an explanation." It's hard for =
people to meet you (not you specifically but you in the general sense) =
halfway when they don't even know what your starting point is.

You are correct to remind us that this is an organization by and for
undergraduates. When I was an undergraduate I experienced nothing but
tyranny and imperialistic oppression from my own frat Bros. who were =
in
National Officers. (1100 Waltower KC MO, before Indepence MO) These =
bullies
errr Brothers, all of whom were Alumni and some of whom DIDN'T EVEN
PLEDGE!, didn't care about the pain and suffering they were causing to =
us
undergraduates. They never once took our feelings into consideration. =
They
imposed their will on us, against our wishes. Thats why these issues =
won't
die, because nothing was EVER done to try to work through these =
challenges.
Like you say, it's coming up again and it will be again and again =
until
they give us a better reason than because we said so! I want to be =
there to
comfort and support those under graduates who are still experiencing =
the
tyranny of the majority. It's rough plegeing a frat. and then finding =
out
that your National officers spend their every waking moment trying to =
make
your life as miserable as the possibly can. Thank God we had SOME =
Brothers
who actually loved us or our college fraternity experience, left to =
our
National officers, would have been 100% hell and 0% fun instead of a
slightly better ratio. Contrary to popular perception there are =
single-
genderist chapters, Brothers and partitioning groups who would be glad =
to
know that some of the alumni support and love them as opposed to =
desiring
to destroy them (which is exactly what tried nearly did to us).As I =
always
say, I respect and love all of you as my Brothers but respectfully, I
cannot agree with every dictatorial policy our Board implements just
because they think they are Moses coming from the Mountaintop with the
correct way of being an APO written in (their) stone.
