hello. i have been following this APO/BSA debate and i think a lot of
you are making good points for both sides of the issue. i wasn't going
to comment but the attached email from kelvin wallace really got to me.

i agree that apo has strong historical ties to the bsa and many apo
members are/were involved in bsa. however, i don't think that apo has
remained tied to the bsa's selective membership. we have all types of
people in apo and that, in my opinion, is what makes us so strong. we
can agree to disagree on specifics, but in our hearts we are all
brothers and share the bond of our ritual. because of that, i feel most
apo brothers (men and women) can put aside the differences to make a
difference in our communities by the work that we do.

i don't appreciate the inference by kelivn when he said "With the
overwhelming number of HOMOSEXUALS and WOMEN that I have observed at the
two conventions that I have attended I wonder if our organization will
be around for as long as the Boy Scouts WILL BE?" that the women and
homosexuals in apo are the 'weak link' so to speak. had apo not decided
to allow women, would our national membership today be so large? this
may be a debate for antoher time, but i personally doubt that apo would
be as big without women. although there remains some all male chapters
that are very strong many apo chapters are more than half women. as for
homosexuals, who cares what they do behind closed doors as long as they
don't push their beliefs on you and continue to be productive members of
apo? they have earned membership just like me and you.

as far as the 'race issue' kelvin mentioned when he said, "Before you
bring up the Black/White issue and try to use it as a basis for your
con-Boy Scout stance, this issue isn't about race." he, to my
knowledge, was the first to mention a race issue. maybe i missed the
other emails. i think if apo (as a national org) does anyting with this
issue it should be to issue a statement (like others have said)
acknowledging our history w/ bsa but reaffirming our progressive and
tolerent membership policies. if individuals in apo want to work to
bring bsa into the twentieth century, more power to them. however, i
don't think apo nationally should get involved and i don't want the
individuals speaking for me, as a brother of apo.

i think apo will remain strong well into the future regardless of what
happens w/ bsa. thanks for listening to my opinion, feel free to
respond.

i love and respecet all my brothers.

LFS,
Jamie
