Howdy,
Having been a chapter advisor for the past 17 years and currently
advisor to 3 chapters. I would like to throw in my little bit of
knowledge about this.
One aspect of looking for advisors is to find those people who would be
an asset to your chapter but also one that you feel comfortable with.
Someone you can talk to or e-mail to not only get advise but also bounce
off ideas as well. You do not want a person who just wants to continue
their active membership but someone who you will respect advise from.
Also try to vary your advisors, If you can do not get all conservative
advisors or advisors all from one department. This way you will have a
good mix for people to go to for help.
Do not rush trying to find advisors, have a game plan set. Those people
you would like, have them come to a few meetings, have your president
and chair of the advisory committee meet them. You can even try to get
them to a project so the members can not only see them but get a chance
to talk to them.
One of the biggest problems i have seen with advisors is communications.
An advisor has what they think is their role and you the chapter members
have what you think their role should be. Sit down with them and talk to
them. Let them know what is going on with your chapter and do not forget
to let them know when your banquet or cermoneys are.
Being an advisor in my eyes is one of the highest honors in APO.
I hope this helps.
Take care,
