Bros.,
If you're in Beta Rho, Delta Mu, or in SW Missouri, watch out.
This storm may be headed your way.
It is 12:58 a.m., CST. The storm has just passed through Tulsa.
The tornado sirens have ceased. We're in the clear. A few tornadoes
did touch down in the city limits on the SW side of town, about 5 mi. from
the University. The storm worked its way south of here up I-44.
There were reports of wall clouds (but no tornadoes) 2 mi. south of
campus. Reports of a tornado just North of Tulsa International Airport,
about 2 mi.NE of campus. No reports of damage or body counts w/i the city
limits. Downtown is just 1.5 mi. due west of here. Guessing that the
skyscrapers may have sheltered the university a bit, but I'm no weatherman,
so go figure.
As for the chapter here, most of the brothers, including myself, live on
or near campus. About 3 or 4 of the brothers live 2-3 mi. south of here in
direct path of the storms. No report from them as of yet, but I'm going to
assume and pray that they're all okay. Right now there's just some heavy
rain with a little pea sized hail. I think we dodged a real bullet.
No report from Stillwater, about 1.5 hrs due west of here, and
home to Theta Sigma. I know there were tornadoes in the area, but no
damage assessment yet. However, 2 people were killed by tornadoes
in Wichita, KS, about 1 hr NNW of Stillwater.
Norman, OK. Home of Delta Beta Chapter. The F4 tornado
touched down around Tinker AFB, in Moore OK. Tornado was said to have also
hit parts of Norman, southern OK City and surrounding communities. Damage
report is:
1000 homes destroyed
300 injured
24 dead
and the numbers continue to rise. Governor Keating has has declared
a state of emergency and has dispatched National Guard Units to affected
areas. Report is that one of the heads of FEMA will arrive later this
morning to assess the damage. I have not been able to contact Delta Beta
Chapter. All lines are busy or dead.
Brothers from Theta Sigma and Delta Beta Chapters who are on this
listserver, please report in and let us know your situation.
The Red Cross Disaster relief HQ for Oklahoma, Arkansas
Northern TX, Kansas and western Missouri is located here in Tulsa.
I'll post the number if I can locate it, in the event y'all wish to
contact them. Beta Pi Chapter has worked with them before on a fundraiser
to aid hurricane victims.
As to anything further, I won't know until more info comes
in. I suggest y'all tune in to CNN for reports.
Again, prayers for those affected.
To quote Beta Pi's Chief Faculty Advisor (from an hour ago):
"Daylight ain't gonna paint a pretty picture here in Oklahoma."
Fraternally,
Phil Dore
Beta Pi Chapter
