The most obviously way to form a strong brotherhood is to offer a common

I beg to differ. I actually come from a very diverse background (Milita=

Brat), yet I do see very tight brotherhood within several =
races. You see, it's the comraderie that is developement amoungst young =
men
or single gender chapters during the pledge period that makes them bond. =
It
doesn't matter what race you are in. When you place young =
people of the same gender in a situation, that they have to depend on =
each other, A brotherhood strengthens. I don't mean hazing. Hazing is n=
ot
what makes a brotherhood. I stress to those that are pledging =
others that these people are going to be your brothers when they cross. =
You
have to teach. And that was is taught has to be the truth. And =
those that are pledging has to see truth in it. =
[Liston]
Although there is no real way to measure "brotherhood", I have no =
doubts that chapters who are less diversity have much less difficulty
experiencing the strong bonds. =
[Jesse]
Sorry Liston, I know you mean good. But Your statemnet should read, thos=
e =
chapters that have a weak brotherhood experience difficulty creating stro=
ng
bonds. A chapter can have a distruptive history, and not pay any attenti=
on to
teaching brotherhood. No matter if they are diverse or not, they will h=
ave
issues. But on the other hand, a single gender chapter does know better =
on
how to relate to the other. People tend to speak more fluently and confi=
de. =
They create, develop ideas that are near the same. That is the thing tha=
t
help them to mesh.
I've seen some things that is good for a coed chapter but never for an al=
l
male chapter. Like sectional shirts with Sesame Street characters on it,=
Dag.
But I could see that passing in a co-ed chapter. This aspect of choice =
and
decision, lets girls be girls and boys be boys. And when the single gend=
er
can be themselves they are more happy and less friction occurs. =
[Liston]
Add hazing (or challenging pledge program) to the equation and you have a=
dded
a whole new level of bonding... a definitive common point of reference.
[Jesse]
A challenge is appreaciated by many. Someone told me after going through=
a
coed program. "We did nothing, and I don't feel anything for this
organization. I wish we could have been at least scared a little." I kn=
ow
what SHE was trying to say.
[Liston]
I have many friends who are members of fraternities who have very
difficult pledging processes. When they are finished they would do
anything for each other (rationale or not).
When you open up an organization to different races, genders, cultures,
etc, you definitely loose something. What you gain, however, is an
organization that builds towards a global brotherhood.
[Jesse]
Your argument carries weight all the way to the beginning of the second
paragraph. I've seen more than one race pledge together. The results we=
re
develolment of a close brotherhood. Males at All-male chapters are not r=
acist
at all. They have a survival instinct. And when they see
that their livlihood threathen they tend to rebel. But that's about it. =
=
[Liston]
Unless I slipped, I do not recall stating any facts above. Everything is=
opinion.
