Hello Everyone!
Get ready for my two cents on these related subjects.
(Disclaimer: My opinions do not in any way reflect the opinions of my
chapter. Please excuse all spelling and grammar errors>)
I pledged Alpha Phi Omega my freshman year. I pledge APO due to its Co-ed
nonracial Service oriented status. I could have just as easily joined a
Social Sororityand/or been a little sister to a Social Frat. I firmly
believe that our chapter has a extremely strong brotherhood. We may not
always agree with each other (neither do we always agree on APO-List), but
we with defend each other to the death. We are a very diverse group.
having about appoximate numbers 53% white, 44% black, 3%Asian, 82%
female, and 18% male and app 35 brothers who are active,associate or
neophytes (in between final vote and innit.
That does not include several alumni who are active in our chapter.
Granted we may not have that many males in our chapter at this time. It
tends to fluctuate. We do all types of brotherhood events. For example
three female brothers and one male brother when to a dance club one
saturday night. Totally platonic brotherly relationships. Had a blast even
stayed for the male hot body contest on the condition that we (meaning the
females had to go to the wet t-shirt contest next time. NONE of the
brothers in question are gay! We go skating, bowling,to the movies
(Girlflicks and guy flicks), bars, play darts, Basketbal, and etc. (of
couse some of these things are not officially APO Events but they are
brotherly events that we do as brothers and friends. Several of my best
friends are in APO including my best friend. I believe APO should stay
co-ed. If a chapter is started on a all female or a all male campus so be
it let it be. If a chapter is all male so be it. I like our toast
song the reference to Men instead of members doesn't bug me after all we
are a fraternity and we are brothers. I've seen the same argueing and
defending occur with all-male chapter as in coed chapters. They have a
strong brotherhood too.
Each chapter has their own ups and downs but it is our brotherhood that
keeps us together and alive. I love each and everyone of my brothers. I
may not always like them! but they are my brothers and I will help them to
the end.
In question to Brother dating brother, It happens so what. It
happens with little sisters and frats and visaversa. I have seen on
several levels. Male-male , Female-female, male-female. It happens. I
personally have dated a male brother from another chapter. Would I do it
again? Time will tell. Relationships between pledge and active can be
tricky. One must make sure one is not hazing or being prejudice.
