Brothers,
At Epsilon Lambda, any brother could be nominated for a DSK and
any brother could nominate him (or her for the excessively politically
correct). Generally, a brother would be nominated for a DSK at one meeting
and the motion is automatically tabled for one week-per chapter bylaws. In
that nomination a BRIEF (except if brother Risner is involved) explination
is given for the nomination. Example: "I nominate Brother Horton for a DSK
because of his selfless action toward the fraternity." The nomination must
then be seconded. At the next weekly meeting, the nominee, if present, is
asked to leave the room for a general discussion on the nomination. (Note,
that all non-brothers also leave the room when we vote on a brother) A 90%
affirmativve vote is required to recive a DSK. The vote is a secret ballot
and the result is not announced until the award is recived at the pledge
induction ceremony for the term. (Obviously, both the S@A who counts the
ballots and the recording secratary know, but no one else knows ahead of
time-the S@A orders the award)
People are nominated for a variety of reasons, but the award
usually reflects a lifetime of service and caring-not a single job well
done. In many cases this is a person who has been around forever and held
a lot of offices, but the last one that was awarded to someone who had
held very few offices, but was always there to help dig you out when shit
hit the fan!
I would also suggest that you remember the place of a
Distinguished Service Certificate (DSC). This isn't as high proflie an
award, but it does show special recognition to a brother who has shown
exempliary effort on some occasion. If some one in our chapter is
nominated for a DSK and fails to recive the 90% affirmative vote, but does
recive a 60% (or better-duh!!) affirmative vote he gets a DSC.
