Well the chapter I pledged at, Omicron Iota chapter (WPI) has so far as
I know, and I'm 90% sure, awarded only one DSK in 35 years of existence (Ed
Bouchie, Chair Boston in '92 bid committee). Having been a section chair now
for the last four years, and a general road tripper before that I've seen
most if not all chapters within 400 miles of here (Waltham MA)... and I've
seen a lot of practices... from if you become a senior you get one, to my
own chapters, never awarding them.
My personal opinion is that DSKs should be rare, as they are meant to be
an award given to someone whose gone above and beyond. If they are not rare
that gets into other issues of what standards are and stuff, but beyond the
point here. They though should be common enough that people are aware of
there meaning and significance. A tough line to walk I know... but that's
the nature of the award... and personally I'd stray towards my pledge
chapters practices of not awarding, rather than awarding if it came down to
it.
